The Baltimore City Fraternal Order of Police said on Thursday that Baltimores recent rise in crime is linked to fear among police officers that they will be arrested for doing their jobs.
This fear, the union said, comes as a result of the arrests of six officers for the death of Freddie Gray. Gray was wrongly arrested and died of injuries sustained during his arrest. The State Attorneys Office filed charges against six officers in Grays death.
The criminals are taking advantage of the situation in Baltimore since the unrest. Criminals feel empowered now. There is no respect. Police are under siege in every quarter. They are more afraid of going to jail for doing their jobs properly than they are of getting shot on duty, union president Lieutenant Gene Ryan said in a statement.
Baltimore is currently experiencing a crime wave. Homicide rates are up over last year. By mid-May, there had been 96 homicides, compared to 69 at the same time in 2014. Arrests, however, are down: There were an average 55 arrests a day so far this May, compared with 126 a day last year.

Except even counting the Freddie Gray brouhaha, isn't the likelihood STILL the other way around?
I "don't blame" them for "taking it into account." I "do blame" them for playing chicken.
I say to the police, give the vermin space to destroy property and let the city burn.
Was Gray wrongly arrested?
It’s one issue being litigated
I don’t blame the cops... I applaud them.
Also, that is a ridiculously weak part of the state's case. The so-called DA used a definition of probable cause that is contrary to American law.
Thought he ran after some drug related event.
The cops should not even be required to answer calls from those neighborhoods. The Mayor and the SAG have declared open season on cops. Let the Thugs take over and finish Baltimore off.
Blacks riot destroying black businesses after a black guy dies in police custody because of three
black officers led by a black police chief who is led by a black female mayor, with a black female
state attorney in a city ruled by democrats for over 50 years.
So, the first black female U.S. Attorney appointed by the first black president blames racism and
conservatives for Baltimore's problems.
Looks like Newsweek is stirring the pot.
Let me say again..... my lily white neighborhood is rarely graced by a law enforcement patrol, yet nobody is killing each other. I suspect Baltimore’s problem is much greater than a policing problem.
This is what you get when you blatantly prosecute cops on a bogus false arrest charge.
Not too hard to understand.
I don't blame them at all.
They can’t blame the crimes on the people committing those crimes? What am I missing?
They get punished no matter what they do. If you’re going to get punished, you may as well do as little as possible and ensure that you aren’t going to get arrested.
For “believers in the system” they sure seem to have gone infidel pretty quick.
He wasn’t wrongly arrested, because he had an illegal knife in his pocket and he may have had a warrant for his arrest. You can’t have a knife that pops out with one hand in Maryland.
However, he may have been mistreated while under arrest.
I don’t believe so but Freddie is the thug martyr du jour.
Obama, the mayor, the sate attorney, yes they sure have.
Just funny the way it seems when the shoe goes on the other foot. I’d think they would WANT the clown prosecution because it is most likely to throw itself. A more tightly thought out case could be more dangerous.
