Former UK Chief of Staff Lord Dannatt has called for a ground invasion against Islamic State (ISIS) on Monday, claiming that the cultural and security impact of the group calls for an international armed effort to expand beyond the current airstrike campaign.
"The capture and likely destruction of the 2,000-year-old Roman colonnades at Palmyra, Syria, by Islamic State constitutes a potential cultural crime on a gigantic scale," Dannatt wrote in the Daily Mail. "These majestic ruins represent thousands of years of human civilisation and there is now surely no doubting just how great a threat IS [ISIS - ed.] poses to civilization in the region and beyond."
Dannatt continues that ISIS could spread across Europe and the Middle East, returning to the "height of Islam" and Islamic conquest in Medieval times - and further.
"Although the United States might think it enjoys the security of the Atlantic between itself and where ISIS wants to expand, it cannot forget the domestic terrorist threat," he stated. "In light of this terrifying scenario, how much longer can Britain and the US continue to show such a lack of commitment to defeating ISIS militarily?"
Dannatt insists that the airstrike campaign, codenamed Operation Inherent Resolve, has failed so far to prevent ISIS spreading.
"Military history tells us that while air strikes can change the terms of battle, they cannot bring a decision," he urges. "We have now reached a point when we must think the previously unthinkable and consider that British troops, acting as part of an international coalition, may be required to mount a ground campaign in Iraq and Syria."
He proposes an international fighting force of about 5,000 soldiers...ISIS - unlike the Taliban or other "insurgents," as he calls them - is using "conventional" military tactics not unlike a regular Army.

Argentine them in an area with shoot on sight orders for any violating it. Forever. What they do inside the zone is on them.
Dammit...QUARENTINE...
The King of Jordan said he would fight ISIS until he ran out of bullets.
Any word from Jordan lately?
They only had five bullets.
Last I saw, Jordan was staging rebels (FSA) to fight Assad’s forces. Looks like Jordan is more concerned about keeping Iranian interests out.
FWIW, that’s what the US did for the first several years of WWI and WWII; taking all the gold the Allies had, before entering those wars.
In any event, the more important question is, why aren’t the Aaaa-rabs doing something to protect their dynasties?
I’ll send a case of hair restorer for the Bald Ibis, but I’m thinking it’s about time for Arabs to start defending themselves from their bloodthirsty Brothers.
Is this the scion of the same Lord Dannett who was bagpiped ashore on June 6, 1944? Or blew a Fox call or something?
English royalty. No thanks.
That was Lord Lovat, never mind. But they’re all nuts.
Too late. The WHO eradicated it, except for some test tube cultures that are under tight control.
Now just a cotton pickin’ minit here. Let’s be fair. Just because they like to chase cute little foxes around on horseback with a pack of hounds that they’ve starved to make sure they’re chasing the pore little feller, too, doesn’t mean they’re all nuts. Why, a fox is liable to bite someone without a pack of starving hounds to protect his unprovoked attackers. This is all part of a proud cultural heritage. Why, if it weren’t for the nobility in the days of yore attacking the other noblemen’s serfs, what purpose would noblemen have? And are you forgetting the glorious War of the Roses? (But seriously, I wouldn’t say they were all nuts. Sir Winston was bipolar, but his daily struggle to keep from offing himself transformed him into a great statesman, and in many ways the salvation of Western civilization, as well as a great writer and historian).
Not that it’s anything to do with he subject of the thread, but just for the record Dannatt is neither an aristocrat or remotely connected to royalty. He’s a professional soldier whose parents were a bible teacher and an architect. It’s not unusual for a former Chief of the General Staff to be given a Life Peerage on retirement - this means that he’s a member of the upper house of Parliament for his lifetime, but the title isn’t inherited, it dies with him.
Will the US stay out, then come in haflway through, and claim all the glory?.
Don’t forget reverse lend lease. Now almost forgotten except by WW2 historians.
We managed to corral several hundred thousand for the Iraq and Afghan wars. I know we have had cuts and aren’t as big as we once were, but neither are two old men and a dog.
As to UK mess, its not remotely aa apocalyptic as you lot think, and its not the army’s job anyway. If anyone should clear up self-mess first, take a hard look at yourselves.
‘Is this the scion of the same Lord Dannett who was bagpiped ashore on June 6, 1944? Or blew a Fox call or something? English royalty. No thanks.’
Eh?. Gibberish from start to finish.
Some of us reading this come from that land of twits. Not like we’re insulted or anything.........
A British general talks about the UK doing something, leading by example. and all we get is the usual Anglophobia.
