Polish president concedes election defeat to conservative challenger

Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski conceded defeat to conservative challenger Andrzej Duda in Sunday's presidential election, a result that will set alarm bells ringing for the government, which faces its own election race later this year.

Komorowski had originally been seen as a shoo-in for another term in office, and his defeat reflected a desire among voters for new faces, and a sense that Poland's new-found prosperity was not being shared out equally.

The outgoing president, an ally of Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz, announced he was conceding defeat after an exit poll showed he had won 47 percent to 53 percent for Duda. Official results have not yet been released.

"I respect your choice," Komorowski told a gathering of supporters. "I wish my challenger a successful presidency."

The victory for 43-year-old Duda marks the first major electoral win in almost a decade for his party, the opposition Law and Justice party. It is close to the Catholic church, socially conservative, and markets see it as less business-friendly than the governing Civic Platform.

I’m saying when US conservatives get elected to anything more important than town dog catcher then they get bragging rights to sneer at the ideological purity or otherwise of conservatives elsewhere in the world, who actually manage to get elected into government.

The US is the country that re-elected Barack Obama, you’ll forgive conservatives in the rest of the planet, who actually have right-of-centre governments, if we chuckle a bit at how big-talking American conservatives lecture us on electoral politics.

So you are indeed cheering for statists to get elected. Or even elected dishonestly, since you mentioned Obama getting re-elected twice while the media defend him in spite of strong evidence of election fraud.

There are no conservatives to forgive in “the rest of the planet”. How can one be a conservative who embraces state control of any part of a country’s economy?

You sure you’re on the right forum?

Hey, enjoy the life-long opposition of ideological purity, ranting at the media and blaming conspiracy theories for how no one wants to vote for your guy.

Meanwhile the adults in the room who don’t want to live under the sort of government the US has now will continue to work to get right of centre, conservative governments elected.

They won’t be perfect governments but that is how life is, there is nothing perfect outside of God. There never has been a perfect government, there never will be. Adults understand that, they don’t sit back and blame “the media” or election fraud when they can’t get anyone into office more senior than the dog catcher.

Hmm. IBTZ? You seem dedicated to cheering on leftism and thinking that God is going to support your POV.

And FTR, God is the epitome of purity, and represents an ideology that our Founding Fathers admonished us to attain. Merely because Satan is showing his power more in these days, though, you seem to think that winning is righteousness—better think again, for indeed all but one of Jesus’ apostles were martyred, and would you be as brave?

“I don’t know, it seems PIS is really to the left of PO on economic issues”

PO looked good on paper. They promised lower taxes, less red tape, reduced government administration etc. After that, damn POlsheviks raised taxes, created thousands of new government “jobs”, nationalized (!) savings held in private retirement funds and so on. Feckers deserve a rope.

“PiS embraces economic interventionism - A social market economy, it also supports state healthcare and a guaranteed minimum social safety net”

That's what Europe is about. Major parties are either full flavor socialists (social democrats...) or mild socialists (Christian democrats and such) + some small groups of commies, national socialists, neo-nazis, eco fanatics and occasionally some marginal free market party here and there.

I don't think there is a single European country without state healthcare. Once it's put in place, it is extremely difficult to revoke it. Similarly, If ObamaCare is not abolished anytime soon, It will stay for generations and anyone against it, will be called a radical and ridiculed.

Yadda, yadda, save it for Sunday Mr Preacher Man.

I’m bored with this discussion already, come back to me when you get your true-blue, sea-green incorruptible conservative elected, like back in, oh that’s right, never.

Enjoy eight years of Hillary knowing you never compromised on your ideological purity, meanwhile the rest of the real world will be electing right-of-centre governments and behaving like sensible adults do at election time.

Don’t hold back and tell us how you truly feel. Especially about the RINOs that don’t get elected compared to this fantasy scenario you’re putting forth.

And that’s aside from the derogatory term for Irish people in your handle.
