Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski conceded defeat to conservative challenger Andrzej Duda in Sunday's presidential election, a result that will set alarm bells ringing for the government, which faces its own election race later this year.
Komorowski had originally been seen as a shoo-in for another term in office, and his defeat reflected a desire among voters for new faces, and a sense that Poland's new-found prosperity was not being shared out equally.
The outgoing president, an ally of Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz, announced he was conceding defeat after an exit poll showed he had won 47 percent to 53 percent for Duda. Official results have not yet been released.
"I respect your choice," Komorowski told a gathering of supporters. "I wish my challenger a successful presidency."
The victory for 43-year-old Duda marks the first major electoral win in almost a decade for his party, the opposition Law and Justice party. It is close to the Catholic church, socially conservative, and markets see it as less business-friendly than the governing Civic Platform.

All of Europe is moving right—with the exception of Ireland and Greece. We are entering a time that will look like the old 1930s—can WW III be far off?
Exactly. This isn’t ‘victory’ it’s Catholic National Socialism.
Europe moving 'right' wasn't the problem in the 1930's.
OOPS! The globalists let one get by them.
She’s a Commie bitch.
Indeed. Perhaps Poland is a good nation to immigrate to while homonazism conquers the West.
Nowa Prawica is Congress of the New Right. Their former leader (nut Janusz Korwin-Mikke who thinks computer generated kiddie porn is ok among other nutty things) left and founded his own new party, Coalition for the Renewal of the Republic - Freedom and Hope. He came in 4th in the POTUS election with 3%. Congress of the New Right came in next to last with .46%.

I guess I would support PO over PiS then. I can’t abide supporting the party that’s more in favor of welfare and economic intervention.
Kukiz got 20% (He is a well-known singer in Poland, and very patriotic) , I suspect most of those votes went to Duda in the runoff.

Sounds like you’re bragging about statists getting into office. Law & Justice’s platform is no different from their immediate western neighbor’s social market economy.
They’re still not moving right.
And how are those tough-talking, straight-shooting, freedom-loving American conservatives doing by comparison?
Oh right, we’re six years into the presidency of a Marxist college lecturer who couldn’t find his rear end using both hands.
Way to go U-S-A! Not like those limp-wristed euro-weenies eh?
I agree. They are ‘moving right’ when they don’t go to the left fast enough.
I used to vote on the Congress of the New Right and I will tell you the oppositte. PO and PiS are both in favor of socialism but in practice PiS seemed to be a bit better. Todays PO consist of mostly leftist minded and highly demoralized people. Neither of these two are able to move Poland forward.
That sounds a lot like Ireland with Fine Gael and Fianna Fail.
Read Ireland’s Third Amendment. That’s an eye-opener for sure.
Canadas traditionally conservative province of Alberta recently elected a NDP (New Democratic Party) government. The NDP was called by one of my old Canadian friends the communists. They are about like Warren-Sanders democrats in the States.
