If the Boy Scouts of America was ever a "Christian icon," then I'd suggest that this was really part of the problem. Organizations like this rot from the head down, and there's no reason for a right-minded Christian to put any faith in them.

I would suggest that the BSA was part of a quasi-religious movement in this country called "Americanism" ... which was an unwarranted (and unhealthy) faith in government institutions and the people who run them.
