WASHINGTON (AP) The National Security Agency has begun winding down its collection and storage of American phone records after the Senate failed to agree on a path forward to change or extend the once-secret program ahead of its expiration at the end of the month.
Barring an 11th hour compromise when the Senate returns to session May 31, a much-debated provision of the Patriot Act and some other lesser known surveillance tools will sunset at midnight that day. The change also would have a major impact on the FBI, which uses the Patriot Act and the other provisions to gather records in investigations of suspected spies and terrorists.
In a chaotic scene during the wee hours of Saturday, Senate Republicans blocked a bill known as the USA Freedom Act, which would have ended the NSA's bulk collection but preserved its ability to search the records held by the phone companies on a case-by-case basis. The bill was backed by President Barack Obama, House Republicans and the nation's top law enforcement and intelligence officials.

You’re conflating your family and their jobs. Their jobs are NOT to be trusted. If you let a cop in your home all warrant rules evaporate, anything they see can and will be used against you. Amendment 3 clearly says you shouldn’t let soldiers (not your son, the rest of them) in your home.
Sorry but you are 100% wrong. In a republic the government is something we constructed and HOPE to control. But again that control is based on an adversarial relationship. And step 1 to changing the government is realizing that it needs to be changed, which means admitting it is not on your side.
Don’t take my word for it, ask the experts:
[G]overnment, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one; for when we suffer or are exposed to the same miseries by a government, which we might expect in a country without government, our calamity is heightened by reflecting that we furnish the means by which we suffer.”
— Thomas Paine
Whenever a man has cast a longing eye on offices, a rottenness begins in his conduct.
Thomas Jefferson
The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions that I wish it to be always kept alive.
Thomas Jefferson
“It is the responsibility of the patriot to protect his country from its government. “
— Thomas Paine
“The issue today is the same as it has been throughout all history, whether man shall be allowed to govern himself or be ruled by a small elite.”
— Thomas Jefferson
“The greatest [calamity] which could befall [us would be] submission to a government of unlimited powers.”
— Thomas Jefferson
Never, ever, under any circumstances trust the government. And never confuse it with the people.
This means that when Microsoft, Google, Apple, and others put in their super encryption schemes that we shouldn’t hear any whining from the NSA or the others.
is only the media did not lie for you and me ... the crops never grow ... and the green fields are made only for politicians and media ....
think the probability of being wrong is severe ... Please God ... Is America Found? For there never was one single Devil that Wanted America gone ....
If anyone really believes they are winding it down, I’ve got some swampland in Florida to sell them.
Have this thought and knowledge that Americans will never be told nothing is wrong ...
Are you throwing in the Golden Gate?
Yes, Know I Lied ... Every Devil Wants America Gone ... Will you agree to these Devils to you being told to be gone? Well, Will You?
Phone calls...I am wondering if there is going to be a resumption of the electoral process in 2016?.?.?
Yes we certainly do have a lot of work to do to restore our republic. I figure it will take a couple of generations to do it, beginning with gaining back the control of our schools and what our kids are taught.
The folks they monitor are not regular folks. Be glad these people are being monitored. They try to blend in and have made friends with some of the everyday folks that they have met. They never talk about their work, even to us. I pray for my kids safety everyday. What they do is not easy and is not without risk. I am hoping the next assignment is stateside.
The government spies on THEIR enemies, not OUR enemies.
Are Muslim extremists their enemy or ours?
You think the same as me. The NSA builds a colossal data storage warehouse in Utah to “hold” all these phones calls, emails, etc until “if” they need to be looked at. So now what happens to this Utah storage facility? Its going to be allowed to sit around and rust?
Dumb question. It is there so it will be used. No billion dollar baby Federale bureaucracy ever cuts off an arm thus forcing their useless eater drones into the dreaded private sector. Heaven forfend!! Imagine how many talented affirmative action hires would be booted out into the unforgiving Utah desert!!
ALSO Ed Snowden said all that stuff stored on you is not sitting in some musty ol hard to access hard drives. It is immediately retrevable via their internal search engines
Ours', not theirs', Obama loves them.
Then I guess it’s a good thing somebody is keeping an eye on them for us. We know of two training camps within 60 miles of where we live.
Signing off for tonight. Later.
“Yeah, sure - and they just gave up their best weapon to intimidate and thus control the populace.”
You’re on the wrong site, Comrade.
I was born in the morning but not...
.
I'm sure you're a nice lady. And I'm from a family just like yours and said the same things 20 years ago.
But your kids are 8 times more likely to be killed by a cop than a Muslim terrorist. You are not going to be molested by a terrorist if you dare fly in an airliner. A Muslim is highly unlikely to mistakenly bust down your door and shoot your dog. Muslim terrorists aren't extorting 1/3 of your income.
And you don't know WHAT your family is doing at work. I'm sure they're nice folks. But nice folks can do wrong things for the right reasons.
Sy Hersh may be a lefty nut. But he said something very troubling last week. Ed Snowden was a nobody contractor. How many thousands of NSA and TSA employees knew of these unconstitutional acts (& more)and did nothing?
