Because it received no national press coverage despite affecting workers in 48 states, very few people know that the Department of Labor decided after Hostess's implosion that the company's 18,000 affected workers would be eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance.
That's supposed to happen when workers lose their jobs because of imports, not because they walked away from their jobs and took their employer down with them. At the time, I estimated the taxpayer costs involved at about $800 million. A February 2012 Investor's Business Daily editorial accurately described the government's decision as "a reward for those who refuse to negotiate, and a sop to the manipulative unions that are most adept at gaming the system. ... It's corruption."

LOL! I could swear that I didn’t buy them all up. I like the Orange Cup Cakes and Yeller Zingers myself.
Do those stocking clad legs lead up to the unions that forced them out of a job? Oh, wait. How did that happen? Dang the luck.
Workers should be content to accept the lowest pay possible for the most work possible.
Capitalism does not apply to workers in today’s America! They need to get over it and get back to work.
Why follow the law when no one stops you from doing what you want?
But, but, but, “There isn’t a single segment of the economy that’s isn’t better today off than when I took office.” So sayeth the lyin’ king. Hmmm. Didn’t we just read that some fast food/pizza places will soon be closing due to the $15/hr min wage. Odd eh?
Kind of a repeating theme with the administration no? Or is it libs in general. We’d be locked up in the hoosegow already if we’d tried to pull the crap that goes on with the libs. And there’s plenty of UPOS that’ll still vote for the hildebeast.
Now I am craving a twinkie
Watch for your future McDonald’s employee to be a robot!
LOL! Yup. How to demand your way OUT of a job in 2 easy lessons.
Unfortunately, the Drakes subsidiary is not faring as well. Funny Bones have not returned.
Also, Hostess: bring back Blueberry Fruit Pies!

A minimum wage pizza cook is not the same as an experienced adult who operates and/or repairs manufacturing machinery in your factory. Years ago, industry employed Operators and Maintainers in factories (along with the skilled labor of Electricians and Machinists). A couple decades ago, “business needs” forced Operators to become Operator/Maintainers with little or no increase in pay and the Maintainers were phased out through retirements.
Now, if a Capitalist had to start providing more services, would he expect full compensation for those services? Or would he just say, “Well, that’s the business climate and I have to provide more services (taking on higher costs) for the same price.”
When I started on my career that lasted 36+ years, we did whatever it took to get the plant up and running regardless of “trade”. Once the union got firmly established, you would have to call an electrician to change a bulb, or a plumber to tighten a leaky faucet etc. I had already become evil management by then and some of the folks I had worked side by side with became increasingly hostile over the years and lazier as well. “Not My Job.” Pretty sad.

Ditto the Orange Cup Cakes and Yeller Zingers - especially the latter!
“I didn’t know about the dept of labor and their assistance to the strikers/un-employed”
Reminds me of that Sopranos episodes when Ralphie then turns to Tony and says “I swear to God there’s a program in America for everyone of these deadbeats”
LOL! I remember that episode. Guess I don’t qual for any of them. What is WRONG with me?

I agree. That is the ugly side. On the other hand, I had a co-worker get electrocuted because he thought he knew how to reset an overload, so instead of calling the plant electrician (me), he opened the cabinet door and did it himself. He pressed the reset, the motor starter pulled in and his knuckles brushed the load side of the starter sending single phase 480 (277 to ground) through his chest and out through his other hand, which he was using to steady himself by gripping the steel cabinet.
He watched me do it a hundred times and never noticed that my other hand was always behind my back...and that I pressed the overload reset with a screwdriver handle.
Like you, I did everything I could do to improve my skills so I am now a supervisor of SCADA Techs, electricians, and mechanics for a utility company. In a technical world, you have to have some specialization. Do you want a single doctor/banker/accountant/plumber to take care of your needs?
