The danger of climate denial - It's no laughing matter
Baltimore Sun ^ | May 22, 2015 | staff

Posted on 05/22/2015 12:22:59 PM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

It's Memorial Day, and the forecast is for renewed mocking and derision regarding man-made climate change from the know-nothing, science-averse wing of the Republican Party. President Barack Obama's warning—issued during his commencement address at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy graduation ceremonies Wednesday—that climate change represents a national security threat seems certain to provoke that kind of stormy reaction.

[SNIP]

Among the Republicans running for president, climate change denial is the current mode of thinking for most....it's hard to see anyone in the crowd calling for military preparedness. Mostly, the candidates appear interested in sidestepping the topic (albeit in a disapproving manner)..

The result is not so much an attack on climate change science as an attack on any policy that would seem to address the problem. Is there such a thing as a conservative approach to global warming? If so, we haven't heard it outlined by an actual candidate—although New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie would seem the ideal mean for the job as he actually believes climate change to be real and that "human activity contributes to it,".....

Perhaps what Senator Cruz and others should do is simply visit the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis where faculty have been looking into how much damage climate change will have on coastal facilities around the Chesapeake Bay and what are the most cost-effective strategies to deal with it. That might teach them why the Navy and the other branches of the military can't afford to be climate deniers anxious to appease special interests or play to certain voters: They have a country to defend. As Mr. Obama observed, "climate change impacts every country on the planet." It's no laughing matter to imagine a future president who would ignore such an obvious security threat for no good reason beyond some measure of short-term political gain.

Scott Walker Is the Worst Candidate for the Environment

"Scott Walker is killing it with Republicans. The Wisconsin governor is one of his party's rising stars—thanks to his ongoing and largely successful war against his state's labor unions, a fight that culminated Monday with the signing of a controversial "right-to-work" bill.

Now (for the moment, anyway), he's a leading contender for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination. At the Conservative Political Action Conference a couple weeks ago, he polled a close second to three-time winner Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.), beating the likes of Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas) and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush by a significant margin.

It probably won't surprise you to learn that none of the prospective GOP presidential candidates are exactly champions of the environment. Probably the least bad is New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who at least acknowledges that climate change is real and caused by human activity. Walker just might be the worst. He hasn't said much about the science of global warming. (In the video above, you can watch him tell a little kid that his solution to the problem will center on keeping campsites clean, or something.) But his track record of actively undermining pro-environment programs and policies while supporting the fossil fuel industry is arguably lengthier and more substantive than that of his likely rivals.

"He really has gone after every single piece of environmental protection: Land, air, water—he's left no stone unturned," said Kerry Schumann, executive director of the Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters. "It's hard to imagine anyone has done worse."

Here's a rundown of Walker's inglorious history of anti-environmentalism. ....."

Dr. Philip Lloyd, a South Africa-based physicist and climate researcher, examined ice core-based temperature data going back 8,000 years to gain perspective on the magnitude of global temperature changes over the 20th Century.

What Lloyd found was that the standard deviation of the temperature over the last 8,000 years was about 0.98 degrees Celsius– higher than the 0.85 degrees climate scientists say the world has warmed over the last century.

“This suggests that while some portion of the temperature change observed in the 20th century was probably caused by greenhouse gases, there is a strong likelihood that the major portion was due to natural variations,” Lloyd wrote in his study.

I proudly admit to being a DENIER! When I can get plausible answers to the following, I MAY convert.

1. Define the “correct” temperature range for the planet.

2. Define the “correct” humidity range for the planet.

3. Define the “correct” mean sea level for the planet’

4. Define the “correct” amount of precipitation for the planet.

5. Define the “correct” makeup of the atmosphere.

6. Define the “correct” amount of sea ice at the N/S poles.

7. Define/explain past glaciation and subsequent warming without any input from humans.

It’s funny to read how secularists, and so called scientists, use religious words like ‘heretic’ or ‘deniers’ against other scientists, rather than engage in an open scientific discussion/debate with regards to the climate.

Clearly that’s the biggest problem today according to the editorial staff at the Baltimore Sun. They’re as blinded by ideology as he is.

Once again I point to Obama’s “Climate Blame.” He is not responsible for any foreign policy failures. It is the climate. The “Climate Blame Deniers” in the MSM will support his assertions.

I don’t deny that there is something called climate and it impacts our lives on Earth. Who’s denying that? I choose not to believe that humans are causing a catastrophic change to climate to the point we have to pay some government or quasi-government bodies to “fix” it. Duh.

that climate change represents a national security threat

Liberals have told us for years that national security threats are best ignored while hoping they go away. When we finally take their advice, they get their panties in a twist.

All the stuff he blames on ‘climate change’ is caused by muslims.

Threatens civilization as we know it... check.
Kills millions... check.
Needs to be dealt with head-on, or it’s lights out... check.

Baltimore has problems a bit more immediate than “climate change”, I would think.
