A Georgia mother and substitute teacher says she was arrested and placed in shackles because of her son's unexcused absences.
Julie Giles reportedly wrote on Facebook that a warrant had been issued for her arrest after her son tallied 12 unexcused absences from school.
The total is six more than the Screven County school district allows. Giles argued that her son's doctor re-issued a note for three of the absences, meaning she would be arrested over a total of three absences.
Giles said she was briefly placed in ankle shackles, with police saying it was normal procedure. She was released and given a court date in July, but faces jail time.
Giles said her son is an A and B student, but often misses school because of illness. Due to higher copays than she can afford, she said sometimes she must keep her children home without being able to get a doctor's note.
WTOC-TV reported:
Screven County Schools Superintendent, William Bland, says this is not unusual, that they are following the law, and that "several" parents have already been convicted in these situations this school year, after not being able to work out a solution with school officials.

The only reason for shackling a suspect should be that they are an extreme flight risk or are highly likely to be violent.
This is just plain stupid!
6 absences is a crime these days?
Jeez, in highschool I don’t think I even attended half my classes.
Of course, I was smart enough to come sign in for the day before bolting for the exit.
Today, the same school has metal detectors, cameras and alarms on all exits. G’dam prison!
My point of view is coming from some experience vs a certain mind set. I received a letter from our principal a few years back that my youngest had spent a lot of time out of school. True. Of course, what isn’t known is that each child/each year is different with respect to health. This year... she’s been healthy as a horse. The only absences were half days and they were for dental and doctor appointments. The year she was sick a lot was due to pink eye, stomach bug, bronchitus, and the flu. It was a bad, bad year for it.
My pet peeve is this: many working parents don’t want to take off of work when their kid is sick. They give Tylenol in the morning and a shot of Advil just before getting them to school. The Tylenol drops the fever quickly; the Advil keeps the fever at bay for “hopefully” the rest of the day. Of course, neither do anything for infecting the other kids or the then infection of the parents/siblings. The school nurse has told me privately that she is appalled at how many parents will say, “oh, they threw up in class? Well, there is only four hours left” or “I can’t get out of work. Can they stay in the nurse’s office the rest of the day?”
This all has to do with funding IMHO. A good parent will write a sick note, and request any and all material that the child needs to complete. A good parent also knows that a child with a fever, vomiting, etc.. can’t do WELL at school because they are sick. If I have the flu, Bronchitus, or an infection... I don’t do much either. I give my body time to heal.
Since any women can pop out a child regardless of her ability to properly raise them, having compulsory education laws are a very good thing...
I know as a society we are completely failing a large portion our children through corrupted school system, teachers unions and a host of other societal ills...but a educated population is what a civil growing culture does to maintain a level of prosperity and peace...
To many parents "free assembly" means free to do nothing to educate their children...
I don’t think kicking butt would do much for a stomach virus, which is what the kid had, according to the mom on Fox & Friends today. I’m pretty sure vomiting and diarrhea are a good excuse for staying home.
She has a gofundme page. Hmmm...
What a load of horse sh!t. Shackled, arrested and jail time because of 12 (or 3) unexcused absences for her child? WTF are these lawmakers thinking?
Lets not work with the family lets just THROW GOOD PEOPLE IN JAIL!
The Nornvirus, or any stomach bug, can set you back several days and there is nothing the doctor can do. Why pay $100+ to go to the doctor just to get a not. Bottom line is it is none of the state’s business unless there is a real concern for the child’s welfare. That said, my son has 3 more weeks for perfect attendence for the year. He did get a stomach bug, but luckily, it was over a weekend during Christmas break.
Coming soon, brief cavity searches... you know, "normal procedure".
I like that. I have well behaved kids who attend school, but once they are there, they could bolt and do whatever, I don’t have control of that.
If the thought of THEM being arrested and put in foster care or boys home didn’t scare them, nothing I could do would.
Bingo. You nailed it. It’s all about the attendance rates and reporting back to FedGov. The kid is a statistic.
I'm sure it is...but 12 times ?
I didn't listen to the fox report...does the kid have some sort of chronic illness ?
I forgot to add: quantity over quality. Little girl got straight A’s in everything even with the sick days. This boy has A’s and B’s. Now.. the same school will have kids who don’t do their homework and have C/D level grades at best. However, they have completed the number of required school days. Those students won’t be addressed.
The child is on the honor roll according to the mom. She is not some drug-addled single mom in a trailer park.
Please do not jump to conclusions without facts. That is what liberals do.
I’m sure that when he enters adulthood, he will, LIKE MANY OF US, get his butt up every morning and go to work even if he does have a runny nose or tummy ache. Yep, he’ll be responsible then and even go to work when he feels a little bad. (Do I really need it? OK.... /s)
Public schools are not educating children. It will only get worse.
Wrong
We home schooled , but she went to 3 years of high school. She suffered from allergies and the school refused to let her bring medicine (benedryl) to school & refused to let me bring it to her if she called me.
I said fine, FU. She doesn't feel well, she's not coming to school. She was an all A student in all advanced classes, a senior at 15.
The school demanded that I come in come a conference before one of their kangaroo court tribunals after she missed 12 days one year. I refused. I suggested they go after the dozens and dozens of "students" with failing grades that had missed 60 days of school and given fake addresses and phone numbers. The school rep admitted that they had 1/2 hour "conference" slots with parents filled for all day every day as far as the eye could see. She was forced to admit that they really didn't have one slot to waste on a straight A student.
I also pointed out that she could go back to home schooling and Polk County could give up its $2100 a year in federal money. I think that was really the decider. I used that retort multiple time over the years and they folded every time. The dirty little secret is that the milk from the federal teat is based on meeting a number of student days. A student misses over X number of days and $$ is withheld. The public school system is run by money grubbing whores.
But the disruptive inner city yutes’ parents get a total pass, eh?
Is that some sort of “privilege”, or just a reduced expectation of behavior?
If I remember correctly, the mom said it was really only three unexcused days. According to her, six are allowed by the school system, and they did provide a doctor’s note for an additional three. The remaining three were caused by the stomach bug.
