I have gotten caught by several of these, most notably the BCS (coincidentally while my sister was dying of IBC). Even though we have been a bit strapped I felt guilty so said I would “pledge” to send money.

They never got anything from me. After I studied up on them, I knew it was mostly a scam.

Another reason NOT to give credit over the phone directly, under duress. Tell them you’ll get them a check - if they pass your scrutiny.

I was called by one of the BC charities repeatedly. One time, I explained to the caller that, unfortunately, I was a BC patient myself (at the time) and had many medical bills so I could not donate.

You wouldn't believe what the caller said then: She said, "Well, as a patient yourself, you understand why it's so important to give to this charity." When I explained again that I had no money to spare, she said, "It wouldn't have to be much. What about $25?"

I couldn't believe how bold she was. lol
