In 1976, at a private home in Seattle, I accompanied a young lady in some songs by Samuel Barber, Johann Strauss and others. The lady was the receptionist at KING, but she later became a star in Portland television and then a treasured columnist with the
Oregonian for 23 years before turning to improv and live theater after retiring from the newspaper.
The Chief Engineer of KING, who owned the house, was an accomplished pianist, but he couldn't sight read. Back in those days, I could sight read almost anything, and I simply asked the lady how fast she wanted me to take the song. She sang a few bars, and I took it from there. That was the night I learned to breathe with my singer. This is one of the tunes I played that night.
