It started shortly after I had my first child.
I was leaving the building on the Upper West Side where we lived at the time and the doorman said have a nice day, mom.
This man was approximately my age, so I was definitively not his mom. I was very new to being anyones mom, actually, and hearing that was jarring.
To be fair, Ive been called variations of mother well before I had children. Ive had hey mami shouted at me from many a car window and more than one fine gentleman has asked me whats up, ma? as a type of mating call.
But being referred to as mom in the most non-sexualized way imaginable well, that was new.

The real issue, though, is the modern-day position of being mom.
When strangers start referring to you as mom, its clear that motherhood has become an all-encompassing identity as never before.

She also had a big problem with ma’am.
In my best Crocodile Dundee voice “ That’s a guy, a guy dressed up like a Sheila”.
For Big Bang Theory fans, Mrs. Wolowitz, Howard’s Mom, is described as being enormously obese and wearing a wig and painted-on eyebrows.
Don’t call her Mom either, she is a cougar on the prowl..
When I had my kids (just within the past few years) the nurses in the hospital always refer to you as ‘Mom’, and the same thing with pediatricians’ offices. Sometimes the last name is attached, usually not. It’s just standard procedure these days to refer to a woman with children as ‘Mom’. No big deal.
I’m always happy to be referred to as ‘Mom’, because I had to wait so long to have kids. I really appreciate the word ‘Mom’!

It would appear that “Granny” might be more appropriate, in this person’s case.
You nailed it. I can’t believe how so many women want to be seen as “hot” well into middle age. Being appealing to their husbands alone is not enough.
This author was hit by reality and she didn’t like it. Her days of catching the eye of a man are over.
My vet calls me dad.
Dumb witch.
Now that you mention it, that does happen.
How about we just call you brood mare instead of mom?
Ok with being called Mom too... it’s what I have been for many years... Kids are grown and gone, guess what? I am still mom. I couldn’t decide whether she was happy when they sexualized it or not. Maybe she needs to wear a tiara so people can see from a distance what she really is.
I’m finding a few fringe benefits of getting older or appearing to be older. At age 58, I will often be charged at the lower Senior Rate of $8.00, instead of the full price of $12.00 or more. Sometimes I forget to correct the schoolkids behind the movie counter. I’m “virtually” 60 already anyway.
This is one of those that “can’t understand normal thinking.”
I want to assume she has no husband because no man should have to suffer her presence.
Yes, Spanish people like kids, which is very cool.
As my Mexican in-law always said “Mexicans love their kids”. Amen. But only those who used to come . A totally different class than current illegals in almost all cases.
