Nelson IS a genius.
Smart kid, debt free means you aren’t beholden and you can exercise integrity in what you do :)
The Ivy League schools are no more academically superior than many of the SEC schools. I have worked with many Ivy League professionals and they are no better educated than I.
Smart guy, The “Ivy League” schools are nothing but centers for progressive indoctrination. No independent thought allowed.
True enough. The ivies give money based on need ... And you’ll usually need more on top of that, so you still won’t avoid a loan.
This young man has made the right decision. He's using his head and not his ego. I wish him good luck with his schooling and career.
Great choice. Great students get great educations at universities all over the US and Alabama has an excellent medical school which ranks just below the overrated, big names in several categories.
And the kid might also enjoy great college football.
The average loan balance for Harvard graduates is about $12,000 total. Except for that part of the population that is from upper middle class to almost rich (about $150K per year to 250K per year), Harvard, Princeton, and Yale have phenomenal financial aid.
When in doubt, choose the one with the better football program.
This shows he wasn’t that smart. He did a lot of work to apply for all those schools. We’re the bragging rights worth it?
Also, medical schools look at grades. The best medical schools don’t care if you went to Harvard, or a State University. They want to know how you did at that school.
Not just a smart young man but he picked well
Good for him. The University of Alabama is recruiting smart kids from all over the country with their large merit scholarships. Over half the kids are from out of state. There are tremendous opportunities for those in the Honors college for those who ask. The campus is beautiful. And it is not nearly as liberal as the Ivies. And there is real Football. Roll Tide.
I started with a community college, moved on to university, and then to graduate school. I borrowed less than $10,000 to do it. Plus, my graduate school fees and tuition were covered, and I received a stipend on top of it.
I didn’t go to big name schools for undergrad, and I still got into one of the top graduate schools.
There are ways to get an education without going neck-deep into debt.
It will be awkward to be a Tennessean at Bama during football season .
I can’t imagine applying to that many schools. The application fees must have been several hundred dollars, if not more.
I would go to Alabama before any of the other schools any day of the week!
Some day we may take to hanging folks from those ivy league schools, just as a preventative measure. /s
Nelson is from my hometown. I prayed for him after hearing his story on the local talk show. He’s from a middle class family and didn’t even have the money to visit the Ivy league schools. Glad he chose the state school. Hope he does volunteer medical work. My sister who’s a UT med school discovered med schools look at not just grades but also the volunteer work one has done in the medical community.
