PHILADELPHIA An assistant conductor on the Amtrak train that derailed on Tuesday believes she heard the engineer tell another regional train operator in a radio transmission that the train had been struck by something just before the accident, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.
At a news conference on Friday, Robert L. Sumwalt, the safety board official who is leading the investigation, said the F.B.I. had been asked to examine what he described as a fist-size impact area found on the lower left side of the trains windshield. Officials said that the F.B.I. had been called in because it has the forensics expertise needed for the investigation, but that it had not yet begun its analysis.

I’m old enough to remember the Washington-to-Buffalo train, and I’m old enough to have ridden the Northeast Corridor and the Philadelphia area commuter lines in the Pennsylvania Railroad days. I remember the Red Rattlers.

I do know that there were three different trains which were allegedly hit by projectiles along that same track...in fairly close proximity... the 3 incidents happening within minutes of each other.

the FBI did indeed deny that terrorism was involved the very night the incidents occured...though they are still investigating .....oddly enough
in earlier threads no one had mentioned their normally ubiquitous denial having been made in this case.
the denial was not at all widely reported almost needless to say
I was responding to another poster’s idea that the Engineeer was distracted at the time and lost track of where he was located, hence the comment on signal aspect and speed.
I am a train person and am aware of the way signals, etc. work. But thanks for the reminder.
the glazing fracture is because the corner of the carbody had post-derailment impact damage that warped the window opening 2/3 or the way up on the fireman’s side...
I’ve only read this far in the thread, and I haven’t been keeping real close watch on this story, but why is everyone swallowing whole the story that he sped up?
If they made up that story to hide terrorism, it could have been a deal that they made. You make up the story about speeding, no prosecution, we make you out to be heroic to the world, and terrorism doesn’t get blamed.

Those windshields have to withstand impacts daily from bird strikes, rocks, even bullets.
Show us the actual windshields and damage.
I have been on those engines and saw for my self bird strikes.
Show us the actual injury on the engineer’s head and face.
I heard somewhere the windows in the engines are bullet-proof. Don't know if that is true.

One article that I found published On The Net on the 12th....quoted FBI guys as saying there was no Link TO Terrorism..which ordinarily means that the act so described was an act of terrorism...
I didnt find that article until this afternoon...

The GG-1’s are all in museums.
It looks like they installed shatter less glass like in autos.
Bird strikes happen everyday on those, I saw it my self one time.
The engineers and conductors have 2 way radios like walkie talkies, if the engineer saw something or something would have hit the train the conductor and engineer would have been in communication between each other.
The conductor is the boss of the train.
