Hats are a real finishing touch for men. I have pictures of my dad from the '50s, wearing the wide ties and the fedoras. I believe he wore his hats through the early part of the '70s.

Hats were normal American men’s fashion until a certain President didn’t wear one for his Inauguration and that killed the American hat fashion overnight.

You can easily find commentary on that from the time that it happened. Eisenhower wore a hat. John Kennedy, inaugurated on a bitterly cold morning in January 1961, didn’t.
