Wonder what he was doing while his train was speeding along at 106.
Are AMTRAK engineers allowed to phone and text?

Don’t see why you wouldn’t be able to.
It’s not a job that you have to pay a lot of attention. You set the throttle and go. Just need to watch in front of you.

Absolutely not..in fact texting caused a metrolink train to derail here in Chatsworth CA that resulted in over 20 dead..the engineer was texting some teenagers who were fans of trains right before the accident

One of our friends has a friend who was just hired as an AMTRAK engineer. There were 1,000 applications for the job. 95% of those applicants FAILED THE DRUG TEST!!! I was shocked at the statistic! He told us they didn’t just do blood tests but many others, including hair, etc. Our friend’s son was the 1 in 1,000 who was hired!

Are AMTRAK engineers allowed to phone and text? What I'm wondering is wouldn't the train have an audible warning for excessive speed? So if the engineer was dozing, texting, talking or whatever he would be aware of going too fast?
I know it was an old engine but it only makes sense that there would be some audible/visual warning for excessive speed. Maybe it was broken or disabled....
