DEVELOPING: The Amtrak train that derailed near Philadelphia Tuesday night-- killing at least seven and sending over 200 to area hospitals-- appeared to have been traveling at more than 100 miles an hour as it approached a sharp curve on the track, two people with knowledge of the investigation told The Wall Street Journal.

amazing... I would have bet that there were systems that would have have governed the speed. Especially in perilous areas.
So with one trillion spent on infrastructure since 2010...
The general Amtrak speed limit is 79 mph, less in curves.
Have no fear! Hillary’s college sweetheart is on the job!

“Train was running 10 minute late on departure.
Trying to make up time.”
Not the first time ...
They gave him his orders in Monroe Virginia
Sayin’ Steve you’re way behind time
This is not 38, this is ol’ 97
You must put her into Spencer on time

He turned around and said to his black greasy fireman
Better shovel on a little more coal
And when we cross that White Oak Mountain
You can watch 97 roll
It’s a mighty rough road from Lynchburg to Danville
With the line on a three-mile grade
It was on that grade that he lost his airbrakes
You can see what a jump he made
He was goin’ down the hill makin’ 90 miles an hour
When the whistle began to scream
They found him in the wreck with his hand on the throttle
He’d been scalded to death by the steam
A Telegram came from Washington station and this is how it read
The brave engineer who ran 97 is lying in Danville dead
So come all you ladies, you must take warnin’
From this time on and learn
Never speak harsh words to your true lovin’ husbands
They may leave you and never return
I driven up to Danville many times and thought about the song when I saw the headline.
Reminds me of what happened in Italy a while back, same set of circumstances, going way too fast, except in Italy I think the train hit a guardrail
UPDATE: Navy midshipman killed in #Amtrak188 crash ID’d as 20-year-old Justin Zemser of NYC
So sad, a Navy midshipman and so young..may he and the other victims RIP
“...Casey Jones you better, watch your speed.”
Security camera showing the crash taking place.
Using a stopwatch and knowing the length of the train cars it should be possible to get a good fix on the train speed from that video. Doesn't look like 100mph to me.
Probably rushing to pick up Biden?
Now that’s putting the petal to the metal but on a 50 mph curve, it was destined to not work....
On another thread, Freepers had estimated it’s speed (based on the video) at between 80 and 90 mph.
How fast is that train supposed to travel?
*******
.....The speed limit is 70 mph just before the curve and 50 mph along the curve itself,
the Federal Railroad Administration said....
More info should be forthcoming as they have found the black box
according to the following article.

60 in a train feels like 100 in a modern form of transportation.
Pray America is waking
Was the seat belt sign on? /sarc
It will be interesting to see the engineer and learn of his record.
They already are blaming Republicans. Listen to the reporter in the video from post 19. She even accuses the train of ‘leaning to the right.’
Gust on. Fox said earlier that there was such a device. It could be turned off by engineer. The event recorders are being analyzed. No confirmation on the speed. Its just speculation thus far
