You can (partially) thank the housing collapse for the bourbon shortage
Business Insider ^ | 5-12-15 | Portia Crowe

We've reported before on the Great Bourbon Shortage that's coming, and the skeptics who don't think it's real.

Now we have some more context on what could be contributing to the shortage: the housing crash.

Let's take a step back.

You probably know that there's been a huge uptick in the popularity of whiskey in America – especially craft whiskeys and, in particular, bourbon. Demand has surged and the number of distillers has ballooned.

Now, understand that bourbon, a specific type of American whiskey, must be aged for two years in brand new oak barrels. Usually it's aged in white oak, a hardwood native to the eastern US. While Scotch and other liquors can be aged in reused barrels, bourbon cannot.

God help me, if these stupid hipsters keep my from getting Bourbon I am going to tear their gangly little limbs off and beat the nasally little squeak out of each and every one of them.

I do not have a distaste for Jack Daniels. I just prefer Knob Creek to all others I have tried including some that are aged more and more expensive. My second favorite is Woodford Reserve.

You left out it is only Bourbon if it is made in Kentucky.

Nope. Bourbon can be made anywhere in the United States. If you want to label something as Kentucky Bourbon, then it must be made in Kentucky (unlike Kentucky Fried Chicken, it's not the method, it's the location).

Yes, Blanton’s is my favorite. OTOH, I drink Evan Williams :o)

Here’s something I didn’t know about the pewter horse and jockey... kinda cool - getting the whole collection is now on my to-do list:

There are eight different stopper designs, each with a different letter of the alphabet molded into it and topped with a figurine of a racehorse and jockey. When placed in order, spelling “B L A N T O N’ S”, the horse and jockey’s poses display eight different scenes of a horse race, from standing at the gate, to crossing the finish line with a win.

Also if you send all 8 back to Blanton’s they will put them in a display case and send it back to you.

That would be great in the man cave. I’ll try to buy them in order so I don’t have duplicates. I never noticed they had different ponies and letters.

I have been giving my empties to a lady at work who encrusts them with coins, medals, jewels, etc. They’re very nice, and the horse on top sets it off.

I never noticed either. I had a buddy that runs a bar tell me about it. I see the CORK as an impediment by default. HA!

After reading the many comments, I have come to two conclusions.

1.) There are way to many FReepers who are whiskey experts

2.) The economy is so bad that too many FReepers are getting educated on the finer points of whiskey

Here’s a YouTube video on the tasting center/sales center that my DIL put together for MGP at the distillery.

I don't even know who sells 2 year bourbon, though I'm sure there must be.

Try Breckenridge of Breckenridge, CO. It's aged only two years, but it is excellent.

I noticed that one of the buildings has a sign that says Seagrams Distilleries.

We collected all of them for a colleague for his retirement from the company. This task requires than polishing off more than eight bottles, as some of them are quite rare, for example the “n’s” which is quite different than the plain old “n”. The sacrifices that we do for friends.

Try Breckenridge of Breckenridge, CO.

I live on the bourbon trail in Kentucky, so I do have my loyalties /grin

However, I read some articles and reviews after reading your post. I will take a look and see if it is even available here. It could very well not be sold here. I've not noticed any non-Kentucky bourbons. But you have piqued my curiosity. Thanks.

I favor the Buffalo Trace brands in general. We always have a bottle of Buffalo Trace, and Weller in the larder, with Blanton’s when we can get a bottle with Stagg and Stagg Jr to round things out. That said, we smile gently on Jefferson Reserve and Breckenridge, they stand up very well with our top shelf favorites.

I will only drink whiskey with real alcohol in it and I only eat food grown on the planet Earth. I’m very particular or should I say peculiar?

Prefer Scotch and Vodka and Tequila... eschew bourbon... so no problem :)
