(CBSNews) An Oregon family traveling with a 15-year old autistic girl was kicked off a flight this week for what the airline calls a disruptive situation.
The family calls it an outrage.
Video shot by a fellow passenger and posted to YouTube showed Salt Lake City airport police removing the family from a United Airlines flight last Tuesday, after the pilot made an emergency landing.
The girls mother, Donna Beegle, was shocked when officers explained why.
He said, Well, the captain doesnt feel comfortable flying to Portland with your daughter on his flight, Beegle told CBS News.
The trouble began halfway through the flight from Houston to Portland. Beegle says her daughter, Juliette, was hungry and started to act up.
I know her. When she gets over hungry or over thirsty, she really struggles, Beegle described.
Her mother says Juliette is a picky eater, so she asked a flight attendant if she could purchase a hot meal from first class and says she was told no.
Well, I said, How about we wait for her to have a meltdown and then she is crying and tries to scratch and then youll want to help her,' Beegle said she told the flight attendant.
Beegle eventually got the meal and said Juliette calmed down. Then came an announcement from the captain.
We were shocked to hear them say, Were going to make an emergency landing in Salt Lake City, we have a passenger in the back of the plane who has behavior issues,' Beegle said.

So you would travel to Disney in FL from Oregon in a car because your child may need a simple special accommodation on an airline that you have paid $1000s? Honestly I am disgusted by my fellow freepers that would be so unkind to a family with a child that has special needs. Several recommended a good slap to the face and others drugs to sedate the child. I guess people with special needs kids should chain them in a closet lest the run through the isles of a plane scratching the eyes out of fellow passengers
Humblegunner...she is a disabled little girl who was flying back from a family trip from Disney in FL. If you can not find the human decency to consider that a simple accommodation may make her life easier on a long day of flying I don’t know what to say. I never believed in the left’s caricature of unfeeling mean heartless conservatives but this thread is giving me a glimpse. By the grace of God go I. If we stop being the heart and hands of God we just become hollow voice without compassion.
When following the entire story on the FR site then continuing it to the website and read story about "mom" I realized just how distorted everything had become.
First, in my mind, the media will treat stories about 15 year olds as "children" as in "autistic child" but also "woman making her own choice" when writing about abortion, as "teen" when writing about "yutes overturning cars, looting and burning CVS's," so we all need to be careful when dealing with media.
All of that being said, it seemed to me that "Dr. Mom," smelling hot food in First Class, decided that her "child" just had to have some or she might become out-of-control, biting and scratching everyone in sight!!!
Airline was totally in the right to boot not only 15 year old but also Dr. Mom, and charged her for a First Class airline ticket to boot, if that's what it took to get that hot meal (I had a hot meal in First Class once and I'd not have badgered anyone for another!)
This mom should probably be charged with negligence for not providing her own autistic 15 year old with food - my daughters at 15 could out eat many professional football players, so that would have taken not one but three "First Class hot meals!"
Fifteen years old is a little girl?
I've seen recent video of a fifteen year old girl tearing up a McDonald's and almost beating another girl to death.
So.. if she freaks out on the plane?
We should all just love her and that'll fix everything.
Sorry. You pose a threat or make a threat on a plane, you're hosed.
That's life in the real world.
Are you for real or was your post a parody? Do you thing a mother with an autistic child would "smell" hot food and want to get some for free? If you really have daughters I grieve that you are raising them without awareness that some families have children with special needs and a little human compassion is a sign of civilized society
Yes...she is a little girl who has a disability which makes here wvwn more vulnerable. I guess you are in the freeper camp of a “good slap to the face” would set the little hellion straight
I don’t see the issue as autism. I see the issue as a mother looking for attention.
Fine.
Suppose this 15 year old little girl flips out and scratches
the eyes out of your 3 year old and bites a hole in her throat?
Is that also acceptable behavior on a plane?
Really...you are just being a jerk at this point. Why don't you find someone posting blogs to make yourself feel useful
hahaha...
So go heat me up a meal that I didn't pay for and maybe I'll knock it off before I get violent.
Right?
why didn't the mother bring food to heat in the plane's microwave for her child? I think your disgust is misplaced. I also think the mother threatened the attendant when she implied " do as I say or my kid will start scratching and kicking". Absolutely NO sympathy for that woman.
She’s not a “little girl” and her own mother admitted that she could become violent.
Agreed.
OK, now that was clever.
This mom demanded airline personnel give her 15 year old daughter a "hot first class meal" or threatened the girl would "scratch others" to get some food, as she was "hungry."
I was merely making the point that that mom (a Doctor no less,) should have thought enough of her own daughter to have brought some food herself to feed her own child!
What are you talking about lady, had you read the rest that I was responding to????
Either read the story and the dialogue or stay out of it - you've made no sense at all.
wow I am impressed with how big and strong you are. Just what the world needs...more men who can’t find it in them to protect a young disabled girl. Oh the evil mom who offered to pay for a hot meal to take care of her hurting child.
The “child” was “hurting” because of being on an airplane.
The solution to this still evades you?
"I asked if I can purchase something hot for my daughter and [the first class flight attendant] said no" she said. "I called him back over and I said to him, 'Please, help us out here,'" but he again refused."
You are still NOT admitting the mother made a threat to get what you wanted (a hot meal). After that, it went downhill for her (rightfully so).
You CANNOT make threats of dangerous people on an airline and expect to remain onboard unless YOU are an idiot.
That the girl was autistic is not an issue, what the issue is that she made a threat to get what she wanted (its called blackmail, by the way).
