Rep. Steve King on Tuesday stressed the importance of defending free speech in the U.S. in the face of radical Islam, hours after ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack outside a Prophet Mohammed cartoon contest in Texas.
But the attack, carried out by two gunmen Sunday night, didn't come as a total surprise to King, a conservative Republican from Iowa who said Tuesday on CNN's "New Day" that "we knew this was coming in some fashion or another" -- pointing to attacks in Europe as harbingers of the threat the U.S. also faces from Islamist terrorists.
And King beat back criticism of the event targeted Monday -- one deemed offensive by many Muslims.
"I think we have to push back on this. I don't think that what they did down there was offensive. I think it was a robust demonstration of freedom of speech and we have to do that," King said. "If the speech is not offensive it doesn't need to be protected by our first amendment constitution."
King called the attack an attempt to bring "Sharia law into America by intimidation" and said without a robust backing of freedom of speech, Islamists will "keep redefining what's offensive until then all of their rules are applied on all of us."
The conservative congressman suggested that's already a process at work in parts of the U.S., bringing back on Tuesday the since-debunked concept of "no-go zones," areas where police are kept at bay and instead Sharia law is enforced.

Well, it might have been offensive in a fractional, minuscule amount when compared to how offensive showing up somewhere with guns and the intent to kill people over their opinions and art.
This attack ended well with two dead terrorists gone to hell. The next might not end so well. Did this get Obama off the golf course?
Uhm, did you read the article?
CNN is not defending Islam in this article.
Far from it.
Set these things up monthly. Post snipers a various points.
It’s like putting out Tink’s
Will Ayatollah Obama be sending the Attorney General to Garland to figure out a way to prosecute the law enforcement officer(s) who took down these two muslim terrorists?
Disgusting display by the CNN terrorism enabler in the video. I wonder if a line of CNN talking heads were marched down to the beach and beheaded by ISIS if the rest of them would wake up? Probably not. ISIS has already done this with Christians and it has gone down the liberal memory hole.
That’s a great point:
How about this being OFFENSIVE: The fact that two men showed up at a legal meeting with AK-47’s and a plan to kill people.
I AGREE .. THAT IS OFFENSIVE TO ME.
“we knew this was coming”
It’s never stopped.
The universalism of Islam, in its all-embracing creed, is imposed on the believers as a continuous process of warfare, psychological and political, if not strictly military. . . . The Jihad, accordingly, may be stated as a doctrine of a permanent state of war, not continuous fighting. Majid Khadduri

If you don't want to offend them, you must convert.
Egged on and encouraged by the radical muzzies in the white hut.
Thank GOD for the police officer that prevented a massacre.
The thing that gets me is that this is viewed as some type of “first” time that Islamic terrorism has come to US soil. Its happened a dozen or more times over the past decade. But the press has lied about it and claimed that the prior cases were “lone gunmen” or just plain crazy people.
Come on, give 'em a break. We haven't had any attacks at all from those right-wing Mormon crazies or those arch conservatives over at the Jewish Defense League. This is proof that our billions spent at DHS are well spent.
I think it would do everyone some good to image search Belsan.
Pam Gellar did great on CNN yesterday.
