You know how Jeb Bush and other immigration enthusiasts are always telling us how conservative immigrants are, how theyre more religious and traditionalist? Appealing to their supposed conservatism is the key, we are told, to getting their votes, if only we would embrace amnesty and mass legal immigration.
There are two problems with this argument: First, theres a pretty clear consensus that Latin American and Asian immigrants (who comprise 75 percent of all immigrants) and their U.S.-born children do not vote based on social issues, assigning them low priority. Second, immigrants are not particularly conservative. There is a mountain of survey data demonstrating that, in general, Latin American and Asian immigrants and their children are supportive of bigger government and are no more socially conservative than the native-born.
In addition to survey data, theres another way of assessing the stereotype of the socially conservative immigrant their abortion rates. If the Jeb Bush storyline is correct, one would expect immigrant women to be significantly less likely to get abortions than the native-born.
Theyre not. My colleague Steven Camarota looked at that question, using an extensive survey of women who had undergone abortions. He found that immigrant woman (ages 1544) overall have nearly identical abortion rates to natives. But there are relatively few immigrants under 25, where the likelihood to get an abortion is highest; comparing only those over age 25 finds that immigrants actually have a somewhat higher abortion rate.
It only gets worse for the native-born children and grandchildren of Latin American immigrants. Their abortion rate is double that of Latin American immigrants, and more than triple the rate of native-born non-Hispanic whites. The abortion rate for the children and grandchildren of immigrants from Asia is more than double that of U.S.-born whites. Given these dramatically higher rates of abortion, its likely the abortion rate will increase as immigration changes the demographic makeup of the population.
The point here is not that immigrants and their children are somehow bad because theyre more likely to get abortions. Rather, its yet another indication of how hard it will be for Republicans to sell a conservative message in this case, opposition to abortion to groups that are likely to be less receptive to it.
The idea that third world immigrants are conservative is ludicrous. Third world immigrants vote for the party that promises them other people’s money.
I think many immigrants ARE Socially Conservative.
But it matters not, as they are steeped in the Socialist voting patterns of whatever country they came from.
They’ll vote the freebies over Social Conservatism every time.
That may have been the case in years past, but with government largesse wayyyy out of control, we’re not getting just “people looking to realize their dream,” but those will to suckle off OTHERS’ dreams.
*will=wanting
...and H1b other than from Taiwan are NOT Conservative either.
Washington Co in Portland lurch to the Left since ‘98 is a clear indicator.
Free stuff will trump social values every time. Illegal will NEVER vote republican.
There is a much simpler reason that illegal immigrants are “big government liberals”. Honest, hard working, law abiding and proud human beings will follow the law and take some pride in themselves to do well for the same.
Liberals are about circumventing laws and destroying culture. Illegal Immigrants are not coming over here to stop abortion, support the 2A and lower taxes. Hell, taxes are lower in Mexico than they are in the US.
The author’s main point is well taken. But we should not overgeneralize. I’ve met many ambitious immigrant Africans who believe that they are lucky to be in the USA. Where I live, there are Asian immigrants who have intact families and make moral demands on their kids. And many of these folks are Bible believing Christians, not socialist Latino Catholics.

You nailed it precisely!
Well, the immigrants we get now are getting govt handouts from the get-go, and they have no reason to learn English since interpreters are required at every milestone. So they come here and re-create the hell they came from.
A nation without borders is not a nation!
Folks coming here from elsewhere need to undergo the same process my great, great grandfather, Ernst Bachert, did!! I’ll bet YOUR ancestors have a comparable story.
Born on 20 December,1834 in Hesse-Darmstadt,Germany, both his parents died when he was 13. Alone, he went to Freiburg to learn a marketable trade.
He spent the next 6 years apprenticing to learn paper making.
At age 20, he left for America, arriving in NYC on October 23rd, 1854. (That was before 1890 when Ellis Island was finally up and the feds took over immigration management from New York and other entry points.) After verification of proper documents, American sponsorship and employment, he was examined for communicable diseases BEFORE being cleared for entry!
He did not stow away on a cargo ship for Mexico so he could sneak across the border to begin availing himself of the foolishly proffered largesse of the U.S. Treasury.
BTW, he went on to introduce a new paper making method and founded a paper manufacturing business that supported himself, his wife and children and 3 more generations of family and provided jobs for hundreds of his fellow Americans.
What part of illegal as in illegal alien is hard to understand???
All that said, I do have one ancestor who came here and dodged the immigration hoops Ernst had to navigate. My fifth great grandfather, John Carpenter, was brought here by his parents, arriving in Virginia in 1743 at age 8. His family were friends and neighbors of a Virginia plantation owner and surveyor. John also became a friend and fought beside this man in the French & Indian War and the ensuing Revolution.
Oh yes, John’s friend’s name? George Washington!
QUESTION: What damage does the current disregard of our well-considered and once respected immigration laws by the political elites do to respect for THE RULE OF LAW IN GENERAL? Are situations like Ferguson, Baltimore and elsewhere a manifestation of that breakdown??
And how would you feel if you were some poor schlub who, even though you have skills this country may need, jumped through all the hoops and waited for years to gain entry as you watch thousands of illegals stroll across the border to be welcomed with open arms, EBT and Social Security cards?
THINK ABOUT IT!
a good example....
I know a number of Indian immigrants. Socially they are quite conservative. Have very traditional views on marriage and family. They are certainly NOT a fan of this Fox sitcom where a young Indian comedienne plays a wisecracking gynecologist.
Nonetheless, almost to a man they all vote Democrat.
Central-south americans are steeped in socialism and corruption from the day that they’re born.
When they come to the US, legally or otherwise, they bring that cultural mentality with them, because that is all that they know, and absolutely nothing will change their way of thinking, ever.
To think otherwise is just whistling while walking past the graveyard, or more than likely, looking the other way while hiring and exploiting cheap foreign laborers.
Orange County, California. Case closed.
--I always take in one Lenten fish fry at the Catholic church near me in Nevada--have never in several years seen even ONE Hispanic family at one --
BS. I come from a strongly conservative family of immigrants. Wow.
So? That doesn’t change the facts of immigration and their voting for the party of gay marriage and abortion and for America to become an anti-Christian Sodom and Gomorrah.
A large contingent of the Catholic bishops have been trying to kill the pro-life movement for decades. About 95% of them insist on giving Communion to pro-aborts, despite the fact that doing so is a mortal sin.
Open borders and amnesty are the most powerful weapons against the pro-life movement the bishops have yet latched onto.
“Catholics” are pro-life?
The Catholic BISHOPS are not pro-life!
Giving Communion to pro=-aborts is a mortal sin, but 95% of the bishops insist on doing it.
