We have no information or evidence at this point to indicate that there is a prior pre-existing spinal injury, said Jason Downs, an attorney representing one of Grays relatives, told the Sun. Its a rumor.
And yet that rumor might have caused real damage in a country already polarized on the subject of race and the police. The story quickly spread to several other Web sites, such as Free Republic and the Conservative Tree House, which called Grays supposedly pre-existing injury a potential game changing discovery. A site called New York City Guns ran the headline Dead Baltimore Drug Dealer Had Spinal Surgery DAYS Before He Collapsed in Police Van (Rioters Say OOPS).
Boom! Seems legit, a commenter wrote on the Conservative Tree House.

I do not know all the details, but why run from the cops if you are innocent?
Numerous anti cop accusations are debunked on FR, yet you are all atwitter when a pro thug accusation gets debunked.
Well excuse the hell out of me for caring about the reputation of Free Republic.
Which blog are you talking about? Let me ping the expert in here.
Well accuse me for pointing out the numerous anti cop accusations that are debunked on FR all the time...because the media won’t point that out and apparently neither will you.
But why was he reported by another perp to be smashing his head against the metal walls of the jail-wagon? Suicide?
Correct. The story was posted here, discussed and debunked long before Mike Miller of the WP wrote his article, and he still couldn’t get it right. Good grief.
My posts have been very specific to the references to Free Republic in rumors suggesting a preexisting spinal injury that have been in at least two MS outlets.
I have pointed out that those rumors and speculation were flat out exposed and debunked within an hour and a half of being posted here.
You chose to contend with me. Not sure why. Did you read the original article from fourthestste.co (sic)?
Did he not have a big rap sheet and was carrying a knife at the time?
should be fourthestate.co
And the “.co” is in the url not .com

Here is the thread that set it all off
i seem to recall saying yesterday that IF he had an injury, then it had to have happened years ago in order for him to get a settlement. it takes years. so if he got injured last week, he wouldn’t have gotten a settlement yet, and if he did get a settlement, then his injury must have been years ago.
Is it true that he received an annuity settlement worth six figures that would have paid-out some time in the future around $600 @ month, but he sold it to a company that cut him a check now for five figures?
I was on the original thread, and that is correct. FREEPERS DEBUNKED that story early.
On (almost) every consequent thread about that subject, it was noted that it had already been debunked.
Still, many remained ignorant of the debunking. Apparently many still are.
Thanks for posting this. More professional journalism in action.
It's almost like you've seen this movie before.
I don't know about the values, but that is correct. But, it was for a lead-paint settlement.
I'm not sure they actually completed the deal with Peachtree financial to convert it to a lump sum.
What blog?
Surely you are not under the impression that Free Republic is a blog.
The word is now part of my new strategery.
Or was he in jail? Not too many arrests happen in jail.
