I’ve believed for decades that most pastors look over their congregation and assume that only a small portion of them actually have a strong understanding of what the bible teaches about sin and salvation

These stats confirm it.

There are a lot of “church folk” that are there just to hedge their bets about the afterlife. i.e. they are not saved.

There are a fair number of pastors who should just sit next to their parishioners. We even know of one who preaches at a small town church who is actually an atheist. The congregation likes him, so they keep him anyway.
