Jeb Bush confronted one of the Republican Party's touchiest debates head-on Tuesday, telling Puerto Ricans that conservatives should be proud that America is "an immigrant nation" and value the contribution immigrants make to the country.
The former Florida governor and 2016 GOP presidential prospect delivered a speech on economic opportunities peppered with Spanish, and his audience responded with hearty applause. He's fluent in the language, and often uses it in Florida, but it's rarely heard in Republican presidential campaign politics.
Immigration is a delicate subject for Bush in the primacy race, with several potential rivals favoring a harder line on those who come to the U.S. illegally. But he took it up unapologetically in his remarks.
"We're an immigrant nation and we should be proud," he said, as someone in the audience yelled, "Yes!"
"We should create an immigration system that drives economic opportunity for all of us," he added. "We should move toward protecting the rule of law, protecting our border, making legal immigration easier than illegal immigration for sure, but we also want to look at this as a huge opportunity."
Said Bush, "The conservative cause would be better to embrace this rather than push it away."

I am SICK of being labeled as a bigot because I oppose ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION.
Yeah, I am a descendant of immigrants. Legal ones.
Can we PLEASE cut the charges of racism or xenophobia because someone wants the borders protected?
Hasta la vista, Bushie.
All whites are as Terry Schiavo in Jebs eyes. They are trying to phase us out.
My Grandparents left miserably dangerous coal mining condition in Mountain Ash Wales to start a new life in America.
This bum is telling me to be proud.

“We should move toward protecting the rule of law, protecting our border, making legal immigration easier than illegal immigration for sure, but we also want to look at this as a huge opportunity.”
That, my FRiends, is weapons-grade egg-sucking.
I am proud that we are an immigrant nation. But what Jeb fails to understand is that there is a difference between immigration and illegal immigration, and my ancestors did not come and immediately get hooked into the public teat.
In my best Bob Dole voice:
“Jeb Bush doesn’t like those who disagree America is a melting pot.” -Jeb Bush
I notice he didn’t say “We’re an ILLEGAL immigrant nation.”
The United States is not an immigrant nation. It is no more an immigrant nation than any other nation in world history. Every nation in world history has resulted from migration, but that is not immigration. Immigration is people moving into an established nation. The United States certainly in the past, before the present deluge, has had immigration. I’m still a bit puzzled as to why Jeb Bush has seized on this agenda and will not let it go, as the world goes to hell because of Obama’s policies. According to Jeb Bush, the United States has never really had a native population. Maybe he wants to have everyone forget there ever were Americans, that there ever was an American culture, an American spirit, an American identity. Jeb, does the word “American” offend you?
Real Texans still remember
Hey Jebbie: Besa mi culo, pendejo.
Don’t be proud of what we aren’t.
Evidently we have been so overtaken by immigrants, that today we are supposed to call ourselves an immigrant nation.
The thought of Jebbie being president is almost as horrible as the thought of Hillary being president.
JEB=!pinche cabron!
No mas Booshes!
¿Por qué no te callas?
(Conservatives implore Jeb to stop implying conservatives are hateful or opposed to legal immigration.)
Exactly right! I’m an immigrant myself, and I am so disgusted with any politician who is slimy enough to “confuse” legal and illegal immigration.
Adios Jeb. In other words take a long trip off a short pier and do not come back.
