Remember what else happened to the men of Sodom. They were easily defeated in battle by a band of raiding warriors. What is significant is that a sheep and goat herder and his herdsmen and friends easily overcame the band that had carried off captives and plunder from Sodom. Remember that the men of Sodom weren’t interested in the strangers inside their gates except to force sex on them.
They were so consumed with their distracting pleasures that security, defense, and true strength were far down the list of important concerns. They were weak. Easily defeated.
Within their city they appeared strong. They banded together at Lot’s door and demanded this that and the other, and appeared to have the complicity of the authorities, but again, so distracted inward that they presented a weak face — and actual weakness — to outsiders intent on conquest.
They also ground down their poor under their feet. Nowadays, that is perfectly legit to destroy small businesses like the bakery for the sake of equality. How long before you have no right to welfare assistance for belonging to the wrong belief?
A sage observation you've made here. This distraction you speak of may in fact be a key part of the divine mechanism of judgement against such abominations.
