US Secretary of State John Kerry urged the Shiite Houthi rebels in Yemen to participate in UN-brokered negotiations to end violence ravaging the country.
This has to be a two-way street, Kerry told reporters in Canada after taking part in a summit of Arctic nations.
We need the Houthi and we need those that can influence them to make sure that they are prepared to try to move to the negotiating table, Kerry said.
Yemens former President Ali Abdullah Saleh had called on Friday for all Yemenis to enter a political dialogue to end the conflict.

Maybe he should invite them to a Job Fair and offer free job training.
What an idiot. They’re winning. Why would they negotiate?
WHen terrorists are in control, the “US” State
Dept gets on its back to service them.
Face it. Iran has won a significant strategic victory. The Shi’ite Houthi fighters have defeated the Saudi backed Yemen Sunni government and army. Despite the Saudi bombing and their lack of arms, the Houthi fighters control the ground. The Saudis have been unable to convince the Egyptians or the Pakistanis to commit troops for an invasion. What’s more is they do not dare send their own well equipped but inexperienced and untested army against the experienced Houthi fighters operating on their own turf. It is not clear if the rank and file Saudi soldiers will fight well or risk all for the “kingdom”. Iran has a toe hold on the Arabian peninsula. At present the US Navy will prevent them from delivering arms. However Yemen is a destitute country that imports most of its food. Soon there will be scenes of human misery. Those Iranian ships will return loaded with food and humanitarian supplies and after inspection will be allowed to make port. This is a disaster for the Saudi royals. It can mark the beginning of the end for the decadent Saudi royals who financed, motivated and acquiesced to 9/11. The Arab Spring storms will soon crack the thin veneer of stability in Arabia despite the oil wealth.
a) Weakens America/AmericansThere are NO counter examples.
b) Distances America's allies
c) Strengthens America's enemies
d) Serves Islam
e) Harms Israel
Or some combination of the above.
One corollary:
In cases of muslim-on-muslim violence, obama invariably sides with the most radical side.
In the event of muslim-on-muslim violence where it isn't clear which side is the most radical, obama stays out of it until the winning side is clear.
It's Kerry's way of negotiating. Building a legacy, and all that.
I “urge” skerry to self-commit to a psych ward. What a wealthy clown and traitor.

Your post is a pretty good summation. The fact that a Saudi prince is giving Bentleys to the pilots who flew bombing missions probably indicates they had problems even getting their pilots to fly the missions.
I think the Saudi government is very fragile. One little interruption to the Saudi oil money (via Iran blocking the gulf) and the socialist payments to Saudi citizens will end. Then the government will fall.
Ol Frederick wasn’t necessarily correct. he forgot the force of money
Kerry will offer money when at the table. if Lurch is smart, he will have induced the GCC to cough up most if not all of the $$$ he will use for the payoff
What “force of money”? That only works on those who worship money. Iranian Houthis worship death.
Kerry said he’d bring James Taylor; they are holding out for Cat Stevens.
If This has to be a two-way street, either one or most likely two or more parties will be thrown under the bus by Kerry under Zer0’s orders in any “negotiation”. Its usually the United States.
ha ha ha....... money trumps jihad
Wait a minute, the attitude that there ever is a good guy in these Muslim vs Muslim conflicts is absurd. Why does the US support Saudi Arabia, an oppressive, radical Islamic state, that gave us the 9/11 terrorists? This is insane!
We are wasting our people and resources in the Middle East while bringing thousands of Muslims into our own country. That is where the threat lies. As long as they can march right into the US and imposing their ways here, nothing the US does over there matters.
The real solution? Ban Islam in civilized countries, deport all Muslims, bring US troops home and put on our borders, and institute a Pet the Pig requirement before boarding a plane or entering the US. If at all possible, get the Christians out of the Middle East and bring them here.
Yes, I know that won’t happen, but continuing to try and pick sides in the Shia vs Sunni wars is stupid. If the enemy is destroying itself, let them have at it.
Another of Obama’s unconditional surrender to Islamic terrorists.
Maybe, maybe not.
The Iranian military might is vastly overrated, especially their Navy. They have thirty two submarines, two of which are Kilo-class diesel powered tubs that have no missile capability at all, only torpedoes. The others are all "midget class" subs that are not considered to be in good repair. They sent those surface buckets of bolts into the area, and have now turned around and headed back toward Iran.
You are absolutely correct that the Houthis and the Saleh loyalists ousted Hadi, and took control of most of Yemen. The fact that Saleh now wants to talk is an indication the situation isn't good for their side. The Saudis now own the airspace over Yemen. No small advantage going forward.
I agree with you the Saudis have an untested ground force, would probably not fare well against experienced opposition on their own territory. I'm not so sure the Iranians aren't already out of the picture in Yemen. They can't deliver weapons by sea, the Saudis have the capability now that the own the airspace to keep weapons from coming to Yemen. The Saudis may then, not need ground forces to keep Iran out, which seems to be the limited objective.
But Saudi Arabia cannot allow Iran a foothold in Yemen. So we have here a question of will. They've got enough bucks and bought friends to get the job done. I simply cannot see the Iranians being allowed to feed the Yemenis when the Saudis can serve that role.
You could be right, and I could be wrong, but it seems to me still a chance that the Iranians are the ones that in the end suffer a strategic defeat.
Where and when?
Or do you mean just from the perspective of “mashed potato face” and his ilk?
If money could trump jihad, then all of the “Muslim world” would be saying the opposite of “Death to America/Israel” and the word “nakba” would cross nobody’s lips.
It is very important from the Iranian perspective to maintain their strategic almost windfall toe hold in Yemen. The Saudis do rule the air but so far they have not been able to extend their influence on the ground where it ultimately matters. Also there is no question that the Iranian navy and maritime is dilapidated and is not threat in open battle. However do not forget that the Iranians managed to arm Hamas in Gaza with thousands of low tech, short range missiles and other weapons despite the Israeli blockade. Yemen may turn out to be a greater threat to the Saudis than the “nuclear deal”.
