Many of them were too poor or too stupid to get out before blacks took over... now they’re stuck in a hellhole.
There's a lot to that. In many areas there are people who once had nice homes on roads that became main arteries and over the years developed from two lane to four lane busy highways and they weren't cognizant of the future. Now their driveway is on a busy street with heavy traffic flying by at all hours and they couldn't sell if they wanted to.
A few are fortunate enough to have the property be rezoned for commercial use and they make some money. Others just spent their golden years stuck in a place they no longer enjoy. -- I guess that's better than being trapped in fear, though.
