One recent report showed college tuition increasing as government funding increased. Funny. If there’s a pot of money, then they’ll raise rates to take all of that pot of money. Interestingly, it was not professor salaries that increased, although they were large....It was the administrative side that grew.

Many years ago I traveled to Italy with a friend. During that trip, we stopped to visit my friend’s aunt, who was Mother General of an order of Catholic sisters. Mother showed us around the convent and adjoining school and we had an opportunity to compare education in both of our countries. Mother told us about “compulsories” — oral and written tests administered by the state at the end of the school year. You could do well all year, but if you failed the compulsories, you did not pass to the next grade. Furthermore, if it was determined that a high percentage of students from a particular school failed the compulsories, the school would be investigated by the state and where warranted, remedies would be implemented or some punishment administered. Mother spoke of a school that was so bad, it was shut down.
That’s what we need here.

Absolutely. That accountibility is why we have fallen behind academically as a nation. That, and the constant lowering of standards. Get the Feds out and we can rebuild our educational system and prevent the curriculum from being a liberal tool for brainwashing our kids.

"I ask because the Iowa legislature has recently introduced a bill for institutions of higher education in Iowa that mandates that professors whose student evaluations dip below a certain, government-set threshold be terminated, regardless of tenure status or contract. Further, the bill calls for the bottom five professors above the threshold on the scoring scale to be publicly shamed by having their names and scores published, after which point the student body shall be offered the opportunity to vote on the question of whether any of the five professors will be retained as employees of the institution. And there you have it, at last: the inevitable convergence of assessment strategies for higher education and Survivor."
If he's accurately describing the law, I agree with him. This law could be used by liberals to scrub the universities of any remaining conservatives. They'd all sign up for the conservative professor's class, give him a terrible rating, and he'd be gone.
More generally, it would lower standards even further by pressuring professors to accept inferior work and give everyone good grades. It sounds like a terrible idea.
To: JustaCowgirl
I actually agree with the author that these are bad laws (see my previous comment), but his effort to tie them to Walker is specious - these rules were proposed in Iowa and North Carolina, not Wisconsin, and - to my knowledge - Walker has proposed nothing similar.
To: trebb
And they have numerous allies right here on FR....
No, just a bunch of principled conservatives that want to make sure whichever nominee we have, he is DEPENDABLY conservative, not just saying what he thinks the voters want to hear, like say, in Iowa where Scott Walker pandered to them by changing his original position once more and supported what he once had stated in no uncertain terms he would not support, the Renewable Fuel Standard.
Now, you can FALSELY compare conservatives the crap posted on Salon, but that's on you, no-one else.

"Are you asserting there arent any folks on FR attacking Walker or just trolling?" "Attacking".....please, enough with the drama.
I see Freepers debating Walker's merits and faults, just as they do with any other candidate. Trebb's claim that anyone not on the Walker bandwagon is allied with a bunch of leftists is ridiculous and hyper-emotional.
And I see he still hasn't offered any names.

Are you asserting that Salon isn’t “attacking” Walker on a regular basis?

"Are you asserting that Salon isnt attacking Walker on a regular basis?" Strawman...and a particularly nonsensical one, at that.

Is Salon “attacking” Walker on a regular basis...yes or no?

"Any nonsense revolving my use of the word attacking is all yours hon." Afraid not, babe. You're all over the map here.
"Is Salon attacking Walker on a regular basis...yes or no?"
Again, this is an absurd strawman.
Firstly, you're trying to deflect my issue with trebb's emotionalism and silly accusations by trying to turn it around and imply I might be defending Salon.
My posting history nips that in the bud, however, and your foray into irrelevance is simply what it is.
Secondly, if your reading comprehension was what it should be, my earlier posts in the thread would give you a clue as to my opinion about Salon.
All this because you can't take the slightest criticism of your candidate. Sheesh...

Ah, insulting FReepers who dont support your candidate. Everyone knows thats the best way to win people over!My candidate is Cruz - he's getting my money and my time. I'm just pointing out that it isn't the smartest game plan to destroy others who would be downright decent, especially when compared to anything the Dims throw at us.
