NORWOOD, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — A coyote attack in Norwood, N.J. has residents on edge.

Stephen Sinisi said he was walking his dog, Raleigh, near the woods on McClellan Street and D’Ercole Court after 9 p.m. Sunday when he saw what he thought was a stray dog approaching.

“I was walking back and what looked like a dog approaching me,” Sinisi told CBS2’s Meg Baker. “Then we got closer I was like, ‘No, this is not a stray dog,’” he told 1010 WINS’ Rebecca Granet. Sinisi was attacked as he tried to get his dog back into the house.

We are lousy with coytes here in GA. We had one take a run at our Chihuahua one night. I just scooped her up and flashed the flashlight on the coyote. It faded away into the darkness. A couple of weeks ago we had a Bobcat come out from behind a bush and come at the dog. The crazy dog was trying to attack the Bobcat. Mr. GG2 almost had to draw down on it.

That was my first thought too.My Rottie would not tolerate a coyote getting close to me.

While fishing along the local river, I’ve had coyotes walk past me, even bushing against my leg as they passed. With the high traffic along this river the local wildlife has no fear of man or woman.

Without offending any gun laws, a stout walking stick — a shillelagh — would do good service as a defensive weapon against a menacing coyote or even a single unarmed adversary.

“The crazy dog was trying to attack the Bobcat.”

Ha!

See, this is one reason I personally wouldn’t get a really small dog. They don’t realize they are at a disadvantage in situations like that, because they still have the same protectiveness and loyalty of a full size dog, so that can get them in trouble.

We see coyotes on a regular basis on our golf courses here in Tucson. I have never heard of one attacking a person. Little dogs on the other hand, if unaccompanied, are definitely coyote kibble.

Well until he died last year we had a Beagle named Buddy who was not afraid to mix it up. One night a coyote came out of the bushes and Buddy went into full bay and charged him. That coyote beat feet back into the woods. We do have to be really careful with the smaller dog even though she is ferocious. LOL!

They’ve got you trained. Coyotes are smart.

For some reason I’m sure your perfectly reasonable idea would either be offensive or illegal in New Jersey.

I attended a short report by a wildlife grad student doing a trapping and radio collar study on coyotes in Osage County OK. She had to do the preventative course of injjections before starting the study. Her work was goiing well and had been underway about month when she made her report. She was successful making her first trap on the first time she placed traps.

My father back in NJ was horrified by the photo I sent him last month of the local, Warren County, PA way of dealing with coyotes.

They grow on trees?
That does it! I’m cutting down all trees on my property!

I have a friend whose neighbor owns two Great Pyrenees and they now longer have any coyotes in their neighborhood.

I’ve heard of them attacking toddlers.

So many areas of the country with these problems - ‘wild’ animals attacking.
Well, encroaching civilization has displaced them.
They also raid the trash at the curb.
Trash barrels have gotten a bit heavier, with fairly good closing lids. Rarely have a problem with trash.

We can hear the coyote pups crying in the hills, about one-quarter of a mile from us, and we are in a large housing tract with homes about 50 years old. Housing tracts all around.
Right now, an owl is hooting from a high tree right next door!

Sometimes it feels like ‘Us Vs The Animals!’

PS
There have also been big cat sightings over the years in our housing tracts, here in Southern California. Our daughter saw one go over her neighbor’s fence about 6 years ago.

Those coyote are huge. Nearly as big as a wolf! Out here in AZ we generally see the smaller kind. Probably don’t get the full diet the ones in PA get.

As a teenager a friends kitten died but before anyone could check it out they threw it out. Then everyone who had contact with it had to get the rabbies shots in the belly for 10 days (maybe 2 weeks).

Years later I get a call from the friend who was going through the 12 steps in AA. He was working on the step that tells the truth to those he wronged and let me know the cat died of something else but didn’t want to say anything at the time. I didn’t need to get all those shots. I forgave him and moved on. After all; it was so long ago that it was ancient history.

You could well be right. Miscreants one had cause to threaten with a shillelagh would likely be in the prime Democratic constituency — and it being New Jersey, the coyote might even be a registered Democrat!

This happened in my brother’s neighborhood. He saw the coyote in question just a few hours before chasing down a turkey.
