"Seventeen people have died of the mysterious disease since it broke out early this week in Ode-Irele town," said Ondo state government spokesman Kayode Akinmade.
The disease, symptoms of which include headache, weight loss, blurred vision and loss of consciousness, killed the victims within 24 hours of their falling ill, he said.
Laboratory tests have so far ruled out Ebola or any other virus, Mr Akinmade added.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) said it had information on 14 cases with at least 12 dead.
"Common symptoms were sudden blurred vision, headache, loss of consciousness followed by death, occurring within 24 hours," spokesman Tarik Jasarevic said.
Another WHO spokesman, Gregory Hartl, told AFP that according to a preliminary report, all those affected began showing symptoms between April 13 and 15.
Mr Akinmade said health officials and experts from the government and aid agencies, as well as WHO epidemiologists, had arrived in Ode-Irele to search for answers.
"There is no patient of the disease in any hospital and the disease has not spread beyond the town," he said.
Ondo state health commissioner, Dayo Adeyanju, told AFP that he and his officials went on a "field visit" with the WHO, UNICEF and the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).
"This was basically a case search to unravel the cause [of the disease]," he said.

We’ll never know how bad it is...just as we’ll never know how many illegal alien criminals that pos has distributed throughout our country to kill, rape and bankrupt us.

“Disease” found to be pesticide poisoning. See post 11.
Feel free to delete or add [Found to be pesticide poisoning] in title.
Thanks!
One of my children asked me a while back why all the news was about ISIS and Ebola; I told him because they were distractions from the destruction of our country. Living here in northern NJ, with empty storefronts and “For Sale” signs everywhere, it isn’t hard to demonstrate the point.
Well, it’s this booming economic recovery under Obambi.
You were right. Your kids are lucky.
Well, your lower intestine holds from 2.5 to 6 pounds of fauna and flora...
Dump that and you’ll look mah-vah-lous but feel awful!!!
Sounds more like botulism with the blurry vision.
That was my guess, but I have other thoughts needing research first.
GUARANTEED that it is someone cooking up something using the ju-ju’s cookbook.
Its just medicine from the bush docktor.....
Some traditions will just not die!
Bring out your dead! The Dark Man cometh! Bring out your dead! The Dark Man cometh! Bring out your......
(Since all records of obama's past were lost in a tragic boating accident and fire, no one can be certain that the guy in the red circle isn't him...)
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
Two words: Ebola Czar.
One graphic:
The neurotoxins of pesticides will block the ocular muscles so you can’t focus., thus blurred vision.
Here is another link about severe plagues covering 50 years in the 500s AD. Very detailed descriptions by Evagrius Scholasticus and Procopius. A lot of these descriptions sound like variants of Bubonic plague, especially a rapid septicemic form, but other descriptions seem different. Also these plagues occurred after a period of extended starvation which would have weakened immune symptoms. West Africa is certainly going through some difficult times with Ebola and Boko Haram, and the population may be unusually stressed.
One explanation is a pesticide accident.
But my favorite is:
“High Chief Moses Enimade, the Oyewoga of Ode Irele in Ondo State, has linked the recent death of 20 youths in the town to a sacrilege done to Molokun, god of the land...”

Obviously, it’s racist for people to be getting this disease in Africa and not in America. Watch for an Executive Order mandating that all victims be flown to the U.S. on commercial airliners and treated in U.S. hospitals.
Very true, and worth repeating.
(Just because Ebola isn't in the news--thanks, in part to Czardom--doesn't mean that outbreak is over yet.) Death rates as reported are down, but new cases are still happening in the region (West Africa).
There is always some bad news somewhere, for someone. With the wonders of modern technology we all get to find about it, unless the Government is having the media spike the story.
They’ll have to bottle it. It doesn’t sound like the time from onset to death is long enough to spread it around over great distances—provided it isn’t some sort of poisoning.
Isn’t the EBOLA cyclical depending on the warmer or cooler months?
