The administration has granted about 541,000 Social Security numbers to illegal immigrants under President Obama’s original 2012 deportation amnesty for Dreamers, officials told Congress in a letter made public Wednesday.
That means almost all of the illegal immigrants approved for the amnesty are being granted work permits and Social Security numbers, opening the door to government benefits ranging from tax credits to driver’s licenses.
Social Security officials, in the April 10 letter to Sens. Jeff Sessions and Ben Sasse, said they don’t keep track of how many illegal immigrants have been denied numbers, and defended their process for granting the ones they have doled out.
“We will not issue an SSN if an individual has insufficient or unacceptable documentation,” Social Security Commissioner Carolyn W. Colvin said in the letter. “In addition, we will not issue an SSN if [Homeland Security] is unable to verify the individual’s immigration/work authorization status.”
Social Security numbers are considered one of the gatekeepers for being able to live and work in the U.S., and some experts have said granting them to illegal immigrants makes it easier for them to access rights reserved only for citizens, such as voting.

It has definitely become ridiculously difficult to get a replacement Social Security card, if you misplace yours or have it stolen.
In NYC, you must show up in person at 123 William Street, with every possible piece of ID you can muster. If you don’t have an up-to-date state-issued ID, theoretically you cannot get a replacement SS card, but you need the SS card to get the state-issued ID. I recently went through this charade, with birth certificate, phone/computer bill, credit card, expired passport, and a few other items I can’t remember right now.
They were still iffy about it, as I stood there at the window, and finally gave in saying they would accept my expired passport even though that is not valid because older people tend to be retired and do not have as much ID as younger people. I thought possibly they were doing face-recognition while I stood there.
This is for a person who has worked and paid into Social Security since 1959, and is a second-generation citizen on one side and third-generation on the other. Half my grandparents were born here before those people behind the counter or their parents ever peed into a diaper.
God forbid I lose the thing again. I don’t think I’ll be able to do those subway stairs the next time.

The case he’s ruled on was filed in December of 2014 by Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott. Kinda hard for him to prevent Bambam from ordering SSN to be issued starting in 2012.
A lot of those numbers are already his.
Won’t all of this be fun for employers who are trying to use the E-Ver8ify plan at the Soc Sec Admin????
