Around Christmas, Hillary Rodham Clinton set off on her annual holiday vacation at Oscar de la Renta's beachfront estate in the Dominican Republic.
De la Renta, whose relationship with the former first lady had blossomed from dress designer to close friend, had recently died and Clinton wanted to be there to support his widow. She was also wrestling with a final decision on whether to run for president.
By the time Clinton arrived in the Dominican Republic, she had largely settled on running a second campaign, but wanted to make the final determination with her husband, Bill.
Friends fret over whether Clinton will let voters see the warm and funny woman they say they know, the one who is the first to call when a family member dies, the one who loves to gossip and play matchmaker for young staffers. More than two decades in the national spotlight have left her guarded and deeply protective of her privacy, a wildly famous figure who remains a mystery.
"On the one hand, they love the fact that she's a celebrity politician. On the other hand they're like, "she's not like me, she's not real,'" Minyon Moore, a longtime political adviser to the Clintons, said of voters. "Hopefully people will get to know the real Hillary Clinton who cares deeply about our country without pretense."
Between nature walks with Clinton during a recent visit to northern California, her friend Susie Tompkins Buell asked her whether she was ready to put her life back under the microscope.
"She just throws her head back and her hands up and rolls her eyes," Buell said. "She's really prepared for this, for the onslaught. She's going into this with her eyes wide open."

Hers is the “Weekend at Bernie’s” candidacy, with the Liberal press propping up her dead body on one side and the DNC propping it up on the other.
Where’s the “Barf Alert?” This was one really nauseating puff-piece. Joseph Goebbles wrote better fiction down in the bunker.
Chunks spewed.
There’s a puke piece if ever I saw one

How many of these Fuff articles must we endure. Poor poor Hell who must rely on the generosity of her friends. /s
Long road to 2016 decision? Give me a break. She has been dying to run for president her whole adult life. Her putting up with Bill all these years was due to getting her ducks in a row to run for president.
After she fell short in 2008, she has been plotting her next run for president the whole time.
I’m not going to read any!
The decision was made a long time ago, well before 1992, when Bill ran for and got the Presidency. Two for one, indeed.
She couldn't take the pressure of a congressional committee.
Now that she is not in front of a committee, she is ok now.
Ms Pace from the AP failed to make any connection to opening her article with Hillary spending Christmas at the Oscar de le Rente Caribbean mansion, then ending her puff piece with quotes from San Francisco millionaire Ms Buelle while writing about her best friend candidate running “for ordinary middle class Americans”.
“Concussion” my ass. Try “hangover.”
Yeah...us normal, middle class people always have Christmas holidays annually at our RICH friends houses, in another country....yah, uh huh
So...... the “dead broke” “economic champion” of average Americans spends every Christmas season at Oscar de le Renta’s beachfront estate.
BWAhahahahaha...
I never loose the chance to meow a bit and point out her flaws. ;-)
