Canadian woman’s British visa hinges on level of affection in her 45-year marriage

A Canadian woman hoping to spend her retirement years with her husband in England is on the verge of being kicked out of the country because officials are questioning the affection level in her 45-year marriage.

Maria Summers had her application for a visa formally declined in 2014 on the grounds that she and her husband David had not provided enough evidence to prove that their relationship was both ongoing and emotionally supportive.

The retired optician has appealed the unusual decision, but says the stakes are high if it’s declined.

Summers’ troubles with British authorities began in 2013 when she and her husband sold their Ottawa home and moved to Hereford to care for his mother. Customs officials informed her at the time that she was welcome to remain in the country for six months, but would then have to depart for at least 24 hours in order to open a new six-month window.

The couple took a one-week vacation in Malta in order to comply with this request, but found themselves under scrutiny when they returned.

Summers says customs officials detained her for five hours, during which time she was questioned, photographed and fingerprinted.

It was at this point that she decided to apply for an extended visa that would grant her the same travel permissions as David, who holds a British passport.

Just the mere fact that she’s willing to move from Canada to the UK could indicate that she is emotionally unstable.

They moved to Hereford. That's a rural but fashionable area that retains a lot of old traditions and a sense of Englishness. It's not Londonistan.

A normal European tourist situation (visa) is roughly 90 days. Then you leave. Some countries might pretend that one day out is enough but the rules generally specify that you must remain out for 90 days before you can re-enter. The Schengen treaty specifies all of this. If you want to get around it....you walk in and do the full up visa with paperwork and show intent to stay around. That also implies taxation, your ability to pay for health care, etc. When you look at Hollywood stars who spend time in Europe....they all try to stay within the limits.

Looks like the government and lawyers there are extorting the poor couple. They’re older, too. They shouldn’t be expected to act like spring chickens.

What is the point of Canada being a “dominion” of the queen if a pakistani muslim has more rights and privileges in England than a Canadian?

The UK isn’t one of the Schengen countries, so not sure that’s relevant to this case.

A variation on this theme is is occurring in the U.S. with illegals being given more benefits by the government than citizens (e.g. in-state tuition for illegals). The ruling class loves to pander to those who break the law and abuse those who follow the law.

And don't forget that old poppycock about Britons never, never, never being slaves.

Did the Lord God of Hosts decide not to be with them yet, or was it the other way around? In either case, they evidently forgot.

Canadian women can be very cold, ever since the federal government of Canada implemented the Advisory Council on the Status of Women (1973).

No wonder the Brits are requesting a confirmation of affection!

Let ‘em come to the US. Federal judges ruled decades ago that the Immigration services of the US had no business being in the “marriage business.” What followed, of course, was a flood of special “marriages” and new US citizens.
