Sipsey Street Irregulars can now confirm the broad outlines of a story first disclosed two days ago, colleague Mike Vanderboegh reported Sunday from the NRA Annual Meeting in Nashville. Last week, a secret deal involving the National Rifle Association lobbying arm and brokered by politicians of both national political parties was struck in Washington DC that would save the ATF from the political and legal consequences of its own regulatory errors.
In the process, this deal would broaden the language of the 1968 Gun Control Act regarding sporting purposes and allow ATF to extract itself from the potentially catastrophic political damage of enforcing its arbitrary ruling that makes every owner of a pistol grip 12 Gauge shotgun like the Mossberg Cruiser a felon in possession of a destructive device subject to the penalties of the National Firearms Act of 1934 -- currently up to 10 years in federal prison and a quarter million dollar fine, Vanderboegh elaborated.
The crisis for ATF has been precipitated by its own actions, which are at risk of receiving unwelcome judicial scrutiny, sources told Vanderboegh. At some point, unless the Congress gives them the cover by changing the law, they are going to have to explain that in open court, he was told.
The deal to provide that cover has three components. The first, broadening sporting purposes language, will ensure owners of pistol grip shotgun-like firearms dont get caught up in a net of ATFs making, Vanderboegh reports. The second part will credit NRA for arranging that, and the third will involve a concession -- an ammunition import ban on "specialty ammunition," to include tracers, Vanderboegh continues, albeit noting the main objective is knocking a bigger hole in the Constitution by (widening the 'sporting purposes' language)..."

Holy crap! Did THEY mess up! Wish I had known back then, I'd have run right out and got one!
Amazing. Leave it to us Georgians to poke holes in the NFA!
“Dumb backwoods southerners,” my a&&. LOL
I think its time to cut the ATF off at the knees.

I would favor at the Adam’s apple......
which, in turn was probably inspired by Kipling's The Grave of the Hundred Head (explained/translated here).
I would go with "mission creep". The mission of the federal government is clearly defined in the Constitution. The far left has pushed for a century to stretch the boundaries of that mission, and the resulting growth has become an explosion of FedGov under the current far left creep.
and just who determined is i am being safe???
the feds??
YOU???
show me the safety clause in the second amendment...
” How is it the ATF is only dealing with the NRA,”
Remember, it is the disarmists meme that the NRA is the real opposition. The rest of us are just brain dead robots.
The disarmists cannot deal with everyone, they need a power structure to leverage.
The thing that is important about this, is that the congressional leadership had to be in on it as well, or there could not have been a “deal”.
“Will this be some hair-brained scheme hidden as a rider buried in the middle of routine and completely unassociated legislation? What happens when someone like Sen. Cruz find it?”
That was the plan. Vanderboegh and Codrea have exposed it and blown it out of the water for now.
ATF is getting desperate about possible discovery with the ongoing lawsuits.
“Now, I have no proof of this yet, but it appears this issue is about the 14” barreled shotguns.”
Yes, David’s first article “buried the lead”. It was a bit murky.
I asked about this and I have documents in my inbox that are supposed to explain and confirm it. It is part of the mess that ATF created with its insane regulatory scheme.
I was on the phone with an expert on the issue, Len Savage, and he confirmed that ATF had given the ok for manufacture and sale of shotguns with a barrel length less than 18 inches, if the overall length is more than 26 inches, and the shotgun does not have a shoulder stock. No NFA tax required.
I have been pretty busy, but I will get an article out.
The ruling that a pistol grip shotgun, without a shoulder stock, is a destructive device, was made a while back, even if the barrel is 18 or more inches. I remember it, and figured the ATF must of realized what a pickle that put them in. It appears that they never rescinded it, and hear we are.

How about "repeal the 1934 National Firearms Act and the 1968 Gun Control Act and the "control" clauses of the 1986 Firearm Owners Protection Act?
If I point a gun at you, you’re not safe and have a right to stop me.
Ditto me being in the blast radius of your nuclear weapon.
The second amendment IS the safety clause.
Wow, dude, I had no idea you were so intimate with some heavy players! I may call upon you via Freepmail about a firearms legal issue. It’s so involved I may ask we take it offline (phone), too much to type.
Still, I’m impressed. I’m just some jamoke, and here I am hanging with the big dogs. :)
I am encouraged, however, that my research was accurate and hopefully we can knock down the Fear Porn level on this issue.
I have a big issue with the NRA and others engaging in Fear Porn. When they do so too often, they wear us out. Then, the response will not be overwhelming when a REAL big issue unfolds. We will be tapped out.
I bought an over-the-counter Mossberg Camper Combo (pistol grip only) back in 1984. Was that ruling thereafter?
Mossberg 50440 500 Cruiser Shotgun .12 GA 18.5in CB 5rd Black PGO
Yes, the ruling is after that, I believe it was in 2010. The ATF (and most of our courts) have rendered most “ex post facto” protections moot.
Consider the Lautenberg Amendment.
The ATF says you are a Felon if you still possess that shotgun. But there are conflicting rulings saying that you are not! Some federal prosecutors are refusing to prosecute short barrelled shotgun charges, I am told.
The fact is, ATF knows it is caught in a trap of their own making. We need to let them out *on our terms*. Maybe we can get real reform of the NFA and GCA68, and do away with
their insane interpretation of the 1986 “ban” on manufacture of automatic firearms for non-government employees.
We should push hard to deregulate short barrelled shotguns, rifles, and gun mufflers (aka silencers, suppressors).
That old POS? Mossbergs have plastic trigger guard and assembly. Mine had a tab or two wore down and it would fall out of alignment at the worst possible time -- during a rack! Some guy said he wanted to buy it and fab a metal part to replace that assembly, so I let it go for peanuts.
And this one, right on the Mossberg catalog website!
#49: ROCKIN’ great work, Dean! Shine the light of truth on these roaches!
We’re working on it! Let us finish taking out the Hughes Amendment first. Look up Hollis v. Holder out of Texas or better yet, go to ar15.com and look on the general discussion forum for the thread about it.
ATF done messed up BAD.
