Youre just not as tuned in to the frightening realities of the world as this kid is. A Brown University senior wants everyone to know that hes not weak for wanting safe spaces where he wont feel offended or uncomfortable its just that hes smarter and more culturally aware than you are so you wouldnt understand.
In response to an article that a classmate wrote that criticized safe spaces, Joseph DiZoglio writes: The current rally that generational pundits make against me and my peers in college today is that we have forsaken freedom of speech and multiple viewpoints for comfort. Im afraid that it is a product of jargon that is too easily mistranslated by opinion columnists hoping to pass a deadline, he continues in the letter, a portion of which has since been published in the Wall Street Journal. If delved with any honest intent into the vast discourse of social justice, they would see how far from the mark they really are.
Now, you might think that a kid who criticizes columnists for using jargon right after using a phrase like generational pundits wont be capable of teaching you anything worthwhile. But DiZoglio assures you that any disagreement that you have with him is just due to your ignorance: When I say your argument makes me uncomfortable, it is because I am greatly concerned that you have not done the requisite thought and research into generating an inclusive thesis that considers as many nuances as necessary to deliver a sound debate, DiZoglio writes. If you do not believe that skin color, age, religious identity, sexuality, class or (dis)ability have an effect in cultural political or economic problems that we debate at universities, then it is you who is trying to remain comfortable despite such frightening realities.
Got it, people? Youre just not as smart and enlightened as Mr. DiZoglio is. And if you think that college kids demanding safe spaces are wimps who could never make it in the real world, thats because you just dont understand the actual real world. If only you knew as much about the frightening realities of the world as this bright young Ivy Leaguer. How kind of him to be greatly concerned for big dummies like me! Despite having pumped his letter full of words he learned on thesaurus.com, its clear that DiZoglio has no idea what hes talking about. There is only one thing that he gets half right: He finishes the letter by asserting that being uncomfortable is the strongest form of rhetoric that our millennial generation wields in the struggle against all forms of oppression. Just replace the word oppression with discussion, and hes right on the money. (By the way, that wouldnt even be a huge leap considering the fact that college students have referred to common expressions like you guys as oppressive.)
These days, whining and playing the victim puts you in a greater position of strength. Its a way to gain influence, respect, and power without having to actually know anything. After all, if someone dares to question a cultural sensitivity or pro-diversity activist, hes labeled a racist bigot, an evil old white guy who spits on the poor, or if he dares to challenge a feminist a rape apologist. Knowing that anyone who tries to argue with them will be attacked is also how these people are able to casually spread false narratives (like we see with much of the campus-rape discussion) without having to actually prove anything. DiZoglio understands all of this.
You may be tempted to think that none of this matters because hes just some college kid; but before you say Haha, wow, just wait till this kid gets to the real world, ask yourself: What will happen when kids like him are the real world?
Si`, E` Vero!
We already know what happened when the flower children ofthe 60s & 70s, and the Domestic Terrorists like Bill Ayers run the country....
Pajama Boy
Just stopped by here to see how they spell.... P U S S Y!
Seems to be a lot of college boys hopped up on soy and estrogen...
I think that this pretty conclusively answers the age old question, “Is there anything more worthless than a Brown University ‘education’?”.
Hey......fugetaboutit! This Brown’s university finocchio is what passes for the results of higher education? We are being undermined from the bottom up by Marxism. My Salerno raised grandfather would have told him “you can act like a man”. Right out of the Corleone playbook.
When I was 12 and fishing with him and his friends I said “Grandpa....were all out of soda” He said in a gruff voice “ then have a beer like the men”. I got it.
There needs to be a way to tell “true believer” type idealists to sit down, shut up, and quit peeing on all the corners. That holds for both social justice nazis and libertarian sociopaths. Just go away, we want to do our work, not take on your stupid indoctrination.
I can (and do) fully appreciate a command of English and a large vocabulary, but when we speak or write, we should strive to inform rather than confuse
Hey Smart@$$!
Still living in mommy’s basement? Is that “safe” enough for you?
Tired of taking crap from your stupid parents?
Move out now, while you STILL KNOW EVERYTHING!
This is what happens when everybody wins, everybody gets a trophy, and nobody loses. You have children who have been raised outside the framework of this thing that they’ll have to deal with when they graduate college. That thing is called “reality”. And due to parenta and teachers alike, these kids will find reality tough sledding. The best thing you can do for this generation is be butally honest with them about life and reality. And when they whine and complain, give them a big hug, smile and say “suck it up, buttercup”.

Beware to employers who introduce someone with this mental baggage into their workplaces. The only place for social malingerers such as this is academe.
I will not be lectured to by some half-bright undergraduate who’s never faced down a mortgage, held a sick kid in his arms all night or made a sales quota. I earn my degrees (paid my own way, thank you) and they’re the least important thing about me. We don’t need comfort, we all need challenge

Same here. Sometimes a simple colloquialism like "bullshit" is entirely sufficient and appropriate.
Their imaginary constitution prohibits anyone from doing anything that upsets them and protects them from opposing viewpoints.
