Obama Highway Plan Paves Way For New Tolls Nationwide
The Daily Caller ^ | April 1, 2015 | Peter Fricke

Posted on 04/11/2015 10:06:44 PM PDT by Tolerance Sucks Rocks

A little-noted provision of President Obama’s highway funding proposal would lift the federal prohibition against states imposing new tolls on existing interstate highways.

The GROW AMERICA Act would eliminate restrictions held in place since the creation of the Federal Interstate System, according to a summary of the plan’s provisions, allowing states that receive permission from the Secretary of Transportation to toll existing Interstate highways “in order to make improvements or to manage congestion.”

Since its creation in 1956, interstates have been funded primarily through fuel taxes, with tolls banned on all sections of highway built after that date, according to The Alliance for Toll-Free Interstates (ATFI). The only exception is a 1998 program available to three states, none of which have taken advantage of it to date.

I guess they’ll have to add tolls to all roads, then. Streets too. How about a toll to enter a city (I think that’s been thought of already)?

I don't need a toll to keep me from entering "a city". They all suck.

I agree, I almost never go to cities. Expensive and everybody wants a tip for doing nothing. I’m not going to support their corrupt govt anymore than I’m forced to through state taxes.

Ditto the Kansas Turnpike.....but if you don’t want to take “Farm to Market” country roads to get through the state, you’re in; fortunately the toll cost is pretty minimal, IIRC.

The only way to make any money is to charge a toll for people leaving the city.

In fact San Francisco has other bridges, and I believe some of them are toll free.

None are toll-free, but you only pay a toll in one direction. Last time I checked it was $5 (Double that for the GG Bridge). When I started driving back in the late '70s, bridge tolls were $0.25. That means that tolls are TWENTY TIMES HIGHER than they were 35 years ago.

When states stop sliding the fuel taxes into the general funds (see California) the taxes will repair the roads.

It is a scary thing when government knows every movement of yours.

Funny thing is we used to fear God was watching everything we did, seems we no longer believe that so maybe God just gave us a new king.

1Sa 8:18 And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day.

Sorry to hear you’re having things haven’t been so good. When finances are tight, it does cut down on fun, and can even make meeting essentials tough.

My best wishes for you.

It probably isn’t about the toll, it’s about conTROL.
Got to pass a booth at some point and be scanned.

I have seen some in SC. where you only pay to GET OFF.

You can actually avoid part of the Kansas Turnpike by taking I-35 between I-335 and Kansas City.

The variable toll charge is on express lanes that run parallel to the free lanes on I-95 and I-495. The tolls go up and down depending on how congested the free lanes are, in order to keep the express lanes free-flowing. A driver with two or more passengers (HOV-3) can take them for free, as long as he has an EZ-Pass Flex transponder switched to the carpool (free) setting.

Illinois is going to get worse. No studded tires, no guns, highway robbery sales tax and now more tolls are going to make it a State to drive around.
........................

Guns aren’t allowed on the highways there?

I think out of staters trying to transport personal weapons across the state violates their laws.

I made the mistake of driving my airport rental car on the toll road southbound from DFW... then again on the toll road going towards Tyler. These new roads do not have toll booths... they instead track every plate, then send a bill with is inflated 25 bucks for some pay online service.

I refuse to have an Easy Pass RFID type device in my vehicle... and I know exactly where this cocksucker communist muslim half-breed is going... government-based tracking of all miles you drive and additional user fees.

I am paying Pennsylvania Fuel Tax... which, thanks to the former Governor is, like, the highest in the nation. They don’t need any more revenue from me.
