Very believable, at the least.
My thought is that the story is a lie.
The mob beat up Dingy Harry and his brother suffered some superficial wounds to provide a cover story for the failed exercise equipment lie.
My money is still on Michelangelo Soprano or one of his Sicilian brothers.
