NCAA National Championship Wisconsin v Duke (+1, 140 o/u) CBS TV 9:18pm EDT thread
I think Edmund has some sand stuck in his vajayjay. He came on here thinking anyone that doesn’t praise the awful officials is a duke hater.
He’s looking for an anti-duke rabid fanboy to match his rabid pro-duke fanboy.
Not taking anything away from the Duke guards. They were spectacular.
I agree, JW. You’ve not taken anything away from anybody, including the guards. You’ve been more than fair with that game. There were some tough calls down the stretch. The timing makes them significant. You are right about that. And you said it without slamming the Duke players or coach.
I’m glad you’re a FReeper and honored to be on the same website. We’re the old timers around here.
I think that you were correct on both ends.... Badgers "title" game was Saturday evening.... Duke was fresh and ready!!
While Wisconsin looked like it matched up well against Duke going in, it is also true that Duke had a deeper bench. In fact, Duke had twice the minutes off the bench that Wisconsin had. Turns out that may have been a much bigger factor than most have mentioned.
Aha, yes - I think that was definitely a factor. Thanks.
Good point!
Just watched the game again in real time this afternoon (Wednesday).
Wisconsin was up by a point at 10:42 remaining when W coach started his first big whine to make the officials review a play he saw differently. Replay proved W coach wrong but he and the largely W crowd in the stadium began to feel ALL the calls were going against W.
They most definitely were NOT. A couple of questionable but important calls went against D in the first half. D’s coach could have whined but did not because it was the championship game and D had been coached on what to expect from several coaches who had been there before.
Kaminsky grabbed Okafor with both arms around him as Okafor made a shot and yet a deliberate foul (a technical) was not called against Kaminsky, as Nance had suggested.
The W fans began to boo the refs’ calls in spite of most of them being the correct calls. Jim Nance and Grant Hill (showing he’s not partisan) suggested a couple of calls not favoring W were wrong and W viewers posting on this thread went with the announcers’ suggestions. The calls were not provably wrong; they just didn’t go the way W fans wanted.
Summing it up, the W fans (or D detractors) on this thread have a right to vent, and they sure did, but many of these complaints have been based on emotion and disappointment and not on dispassionate facts.
The game was refereed well enough for both teams. Duke won the game that could have gone either way.
W’s coach was a classless horse’s butt for all his public blame shifting, whining, and detraction from Duke’s victory. Furthermore, he looks kinda crazy to me.
Grant Hill is so so so eager to prove he’s not a Duke homer, that he goes the other way quite often. It’s irritating as hell. I hate it when he does a Duke game. He’s like the GOP estabs...so afraid of what people think, in a way.
Wisconsin had nothing to complain about in the first half....numerous things went their way. Duke was determined to drive the ball on them in the second half, and they did. Duke was just quick enough to beat them.
You lost me right there.
Maybe the finger touching out of bounds call was wrong, but I doubt Wisconsin would have made the come back anyway.
The one thing that was unfortunate (and slightly unfair) was the game before for each team; those games gave Duke a big edge in the championship game.
If that game had been played with multiple days of rest in between, I think Wisconsin would have survived the intensity of the Duke comeback. It was too much to beat the two best teams in the tournament back to back in two days. Had Duke played someone like Arizona in the final four, that too would have made it tougher for them.
Stuff happens. You have to admire the Duke freshmen guards that won that thing, amazing talent and poise.
Well you’re right about the difference in the games on Saturday - and that had an impact ,as I predicted it would.
But over the years, Duke has had the bad luck end of that stick many times - almost always having the toughest road to the title. I’ve no guilt in enjoying the fact that it was Wisconsin that had that this year. Been there, done that.
Duke has won the title as the best team, won the title as not the best team, and lost the title as the best team. That’s how single elimination works. But winning more than one in every 5 titles over the past 24 years is amazing.
Watching it with no passion, knowing the outcome, and just to take a fresh look at it is brilliant. You were able to have a perspective that no one could have live.
You have to admire Duke’s program, clean, with relatively high character players. It’s the polar opposite of Kentucky, Calipari has done in every program he’s been a part of, leaving each school with a mess to clean up, winning with a fairly low level character type of player. I was thrilled when they were beat, and expected a great game, which we all got.
And yet, they are reviled and hated universally. Sick people in this country.
Ha ha. Yes calling names is so grown up. And watching an entire game again to see the obvious (yet denies it) shows who is obsessed.
Okafor heading to the NBA? Yeah, there’s your Duke team that won it.
They do have a high rate of graduation it sounds like, I researched it. Still.
Go Army!;-}
