Gun owners would receive tax breaks for voluntarily turning in high-powered assault rifles under new legislation proposed Monday.
The Support Assault Firearm Elimination and Education of our (SAFER) Streets Act expected to be reintroduced next week by Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) would provide gun owners with an incentive to turn in their firearms to local police departments.
Assault weapons are not about hunting, or even self-defense, DeLauro said . There is no reason on earth, other than to kill as many people as possible in as short a time as possible, that anyone needs a gun designed for a battlefield.
Though DeLauro is in favor of stronger guns laws that would completely ban assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition, she emphasized this bill would not force gun owners to turn in their firearms.
The legislation would provide up to $2,000 in tax credits for gun owners who voluntarily hand over assault weapons to their local police departments.
The assault weapons legislation comes in response to the horrific mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., DeLauros home state, in December 2012.
DeLauro originally introduced the bill in January 2013, just one month after the Newtown shooting, but the legislation fell short in the Republican-controlled House. She plans to reintroduce it next week when Congress returns from recess.
She said the bill would help get more assault weapons off the streets."
Just days after the Newtown tragedy, President Obama asked, Are we doing enough to protect our children? And he admitted the answer is, no. That must change, DeLauro said.
DeLauro is announcing the assault weapons legislation this week in conjunction with National Public Health Week.
The co-sponsors include Reps. Betty McCollum (D-Minn.), Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.), Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.), and David Cicilline (D-R.I.).
WE HAVE A WINNER
What is an assault weapon?
Is Valjar Binks also from that planet?
She must be a “supermodel”.
Gun “buyback” played out on the national stage.
I read through it and it seems pretty nice, they take hipoint carbines, SKS with a detachable magazine, anything that resembles an AR... I couldn’t find anything that says it has to be functional. I don’t like that you can only give them one but still should stimulate the market for junk guns.
I think she's more like a female Keith Richards impersonator.
FYI, a dozen years ago, the leftists tried this in Calif. It was laughable. I think a few hundred did so, and turned in useless, unmarketable guns. It was hilarious.
If they would pay me a large premium on the total cost of buying one I would gladly buy one and turn it in, several, in fact.
I was just thinking about a certain Mini-14 with a chronic feed problem. I haven’t sold it because I’m hesitant to foist it onto someone - but to stick it to the government and net such a nice profit would be double-plus good!
Anything you can assault another person with?
I just went through several firearms catalogs (once again) looking for "assault weapons." Darned if I can't find a single manufacturer who offers them. So as far as I can tell these scary guns the Dems are afraid of are not a problem any more.
I saw a movie once where only the police and military had guns. It was called Schindler’s List....
I assert that it accomplished what it’s supporters wanted it to do -
it made them feel better as “good people” for “doing something” to stop gun violence, even though they personally didn’t actually “do” anything.
Rosa DeLauro is proof positive that the Wicked Witch of the West did not die childless.
“Harpy” and “crone” don’t go far enough to describe this Congressthing.
Did here name use to be Robert?
Touche!
Hmmm, ATF defines the lower of an Ar as the “weapon” I can print an AR lower for about 20 bucks (plastic) and then slip mold and cast for another 20. So for a lower call it 40 bucks minimum. Heck, an 80% lower would be less than $100.
Heck, I could even BUY an AR, strip it down to the lower, sell that to the government, and then print / cast / mill the necessary lower. Then use the parts that I pulled from the first AR and rebuild my “ghost” gun.
So, I print / cast / mill say 100 of these bad boys. Is the government going to pay me $2,000 each. Wow! I am all for this. $200,000 revenue on $10,000 cost. Hell of a margin.
