Christianitys tent is not big enough to accommodate both the supporters of Indianas Religious Freedom Restoration Act and Rutgers professor Brittney Cooper, who in a Wednesday piece for Salon blasted both the states pre-fix RFRA and the religious right in general.
This kind of legislation is rooted in a politics that gives white people the authority to police and terrorize people of color, queer people and poor women, declared Cooper. That means these people dont represent any kind of Christianity that looks anything like the kind that I practice This white, blond-haired, blue-eyed, gun-toting, Bible-quoting Jesus of the religious right is a god of their own making. I call this god, the god of white supremacy and patriarchy...This God isnt the God that I serve He might be biblical but hes also an asshole.
Cooper argued that left-wing Christians need to reclaim the narrative of Jesus life and death from Christian conservatives, who have not been good stewards over the narrative. They have pimped Jesus death to support the global spread of American empire vis-à-vis war, missions, and free trade, the abuse of native peoples, the continued subjugation of Black people, and the regulation of the sexual lives of women and gay people. Let us mark this Holy Week by declaring the death to the unholy trinity of white supremacist, capitalist, heteropatriarchy. And once these systems die, may they die once and for all, never to be resurrected.
From Coopers article (bolding added):
Any time right-wing conservatives declare that they are trying to restore or reclaim something, we should all be very afraid. Usually, this means the country or, in this case, the state of Indiana is about to be treated to another round of backward time travel, to the supposedly idyllic environs of the 1950s, wherein women, and gays, and blacks knew their respective places and stayed in them...
[G]iven our current anti-Black racial climate, there is no reason to trust that these laws wont be eventually used for acts of racially inflected religious discrimination
This kind of legislation is largely driven by conservative Christian men and women, who hold political views that are antagonistic to every single group of people who are not white, male, Christian, cisgender, straight and middle-class. Jesus, a brown, working-class, Jew, doesnt even meet all the qualifications
[T]his kind of legislation is rooted in a politics that gives white people the authority to police and terrorize people of color, queer people and poor women. That means these people dont represent any kind of Christianity that looks anything like the kind that I practice
I often ask myself whether I really do worship the same God of white religious conservatives [Jesus] never found time to even mention gay people, let alone condemn them. His message of radical inclusivity was so threatening that the state lynched him for fear that he was fomenting a cultural and political rebellion
This white, blond-haired, blue-eyed, gun-toting, Bible-quoting Jesus of the religious right is a god of their own making. I call this god, the god of white supremacy and patriarchy...
AD FEEDBACK This God isnt the God that I serve He might be biblical but hes also an asshole.
The Jesus I know was a radical, freedom-loving, justice-seeking, potentially queer (because he was either asexual or a priest married to a prostitute), feminist healer seduced neither by power nor evil
We need to reclaim the narrative of Jesus life and death from the evangelical right. They have not been good stewards over the narrative. They have pimped Jesus death to support the global spread of American empire vis-à-vis war, missions, and free trade, the abuse of native peoples, the continued subjugation of Black people, and the regulation of the sexual lives of women and gay people. Not to mention that they claim Jesus was an “immigrant”. Then there are those who say Jesus was “gay”. These people are fooling themselves.
Jesus was neither right- nor left-wing. He is the I Am, the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No politics can encompass that.
As FReepers read the rest of this post, please bear in mind that the civil rights unrest that weve been experiencing for the last several decades is arguably traceable back to the ill-conceived 17th Amendment, state lawmakers foolishly giving up their voices in Congress by ratifying that amendment.
Consider that at least since the time of Constitution-ignoring FDR, corrupt federal politicians have been exploiting various groups by promising such groups federal civil rights protections in exchange for their votes.
The problem is that regardless that these groups get the federal protection laws that theyve been indoctrinated to demand, they dont understand the following. They dont understand that since corrupt politicians have established priviliges for these groups outside the framework of the Constitution that such rights cant necessarily stand the test of time.
And one of the reasons that civil rights laws arent getting amended to the Constitution is because the popularly elected Senate is not doing its job to work with the House to propose appropriate rights amendments to the Constitution to the states for possible ratification, the states not constitutionally obligated to ratify any proposed amendment.
The 17th Amendment needs to disappear.
Jesus was neither right- nor left-wing. He is the I Am, the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No politics can encompass that.
I think I seen her on Nat-Geo channel... She was munching on banana leaves and throwing poop at a silver back..

Somebody needs to go muzzy on this self-hating fake CHRISTIAN.
I think it was Florence King who said it is a sure sign you have invented your god when he hates the same people you hate.
Liberals are the most hate-filled, mean-spirited, ignorant, close-minded, murdering, censoring, childish, idiots.
The author is just another black racist. They are a dime a dozen these days.
And she said that on Good Friday, of all days.
This massive slab of God-despising, white-hating, queer-loving lard is going to kneel before the very Jesus she blasphemes one day. Wonder how she’s going to feel when He reminds her of every word she said here.
I guess the administration at Rutgers will let just about anybody call themselves a “professor.”
Very few....
Here she is Brittney ‘The Refrigerator’ Cooper!
Do these people actually believe that religious orthodoxy is genetic and caused by the same genes that cause blue eyes and blond hair? That's funny; I am neither blond-haired nor blue-eyed but I'm the biggest religious fanatic on this forum.
is a god of their own making.
Ah, but aren't all gods of our own making according to these people? What makes one any better than another?
the abuse of native peoples
And, like all atheists, this person wants to abolish the "superstitions" of chrstianity so the superstitions of pre-chrstian religions may be revived and their sacrificial services resumed. If she doesn't support the rebuilding of the Beit HaMiqdash in Jerusalem I am going to be very put out with her!
She eats gods for snacks!
The rise of the Anti-Christ, least the movement and the spirit of the Anti-Christ.
I have never in my whole life seen it like this yet alone in this year of 2015 of the blantant hatred of Christians.
Ferguson was another factor of this along with the bogus meme of White Privilege.
The anti- Christ will rise up and speak blasphemous words towards God, and rail against God.
Jesus Christ ? PLEASE COME QUICKLY !
