When I was in the army, while in the States, you had to separate your edible garbage from other trash when leaving the mess hall. The troops made jokes about it. The mess sergeant told me they sold it to pig farmers.

When I was in the army, while in the States, you had to separate your edible garbage from other trash when leaving the mess hall. Generally speaking, garbage is the wet, edible remains of foodstuffs. Trash is the non-edible, dry remains. Thus, the non-bony food remains are suitable for pig food and the rest goes to the landfill.
