Walmart to Arkansas gov.: Veto religious freedom law
CNN Money ^ | 04/01/2015 | By Katie Lobosco

Walmart's CEO is standing up against a religious freedom law that just landed on the governor's desk in Arkansas, home to the company's headquarters.

It's similar to the law Indiana adopted last week, which sparked outrage from those who say it opens the door for discrimination against gays and lesbians.

Walmart (WMT) CEO Doug McMillon asked Gov. Asa Hutchinson to veto the bill, which was approved by the Arkansas House on Tuesday.

The company is headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas. "Today's passage of HB1228 threatens to undermine the spirit of inclusion present throughout the state of Arkansas and does not reflect the values we proudly uphold," McMillon said in a statement.

It's not the only other state currently considering a religious freedom law. There are 14 other states looking at similar proposals this year, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

A number of big companies have spoken out against the Indiana law, including Starbucks (SBUX), Apple (AAPL, Tech30), Angie's List (ANGI), Yelp (YELP), Salesforce (CRM, Tech30), and Eli Lilly (LLY). NASCAR, as well as the NCAA, NBA, WNBA, Indiana Pacers and Indiana Fever have also expressed disappointment. And Connecticut banned all state-funded travel to Indiana over the law.

Pretty much agree.

But it’s not going to buy them enough good PR to sway those on the Left that really hate them and want to destroy them. It will probably buy them enough good PR to innoculate Dem politicians who support their expansion efforts from significant political damage for doing so.

I do not suffer from # or #2 and neither does spouse. I choose cash to keep stores from gleaning data on me. I answer no questions and lately I have started using fake celebrity names.

I’m pretty sure the Walmart CEO knows that this isn’t going to change the minds of the far left or make the Starbucks crowd suddenly start shopping at Walmart.

They’re playing the same odds that post politicians play.
Namely that there are more people in the middle who don’t really pay that much attention to stuff like this than there are on either the left or the right.

Walmart gets hammered by public opinion for what they pay their employees.
This gives them a chip to play against that.
“We’re raising wages and we don’t discriminate against anybody...and we just gave out employees a .75 an hour pay bump”.
They did just give their employees a pay bump BTW.

I think that like all the other companies who came against this bill they stuck their finger in the air to see which way the wind was blowing and then acted accordingly.

Like all the other companies involved in this their real position on this is Pay Me.

Blacks must serve at KKK rallies... Straight fathers must serve NAMBLA meetings... Gays must serve at Westboro Baptist funeral protests...

I forgot to mention your examples are wonderful... Thanks for sharing.

Hook a belt up to him...free energy for decades at this rate.

I met him once in 1976. He came to my little town to check out a new store they opened. Back when Walmart started they’d lease old buildings that were vacant. Eventually they’d start building their own.

A real nice guy. Now I wouldn’t spend a penny at Walmart. They are turning into Kmart during it’s decline.

Funny, when Walmart opened in my small town of 2,800 in 1975 not one other business went south. Every grocery store, pharmacy, hardware, auto parts store, etc. are still there to this day along with Walmart.

In our town it was Lowes that killed the three hardware stores.

And we actually have a “zombie K-mart” that somehow continues to exist a quarter mile from the WM.

The Radio Shack near the old Kmart near here just closed it’s doors. I was surprised it lasted that long.

Sears left the big Cool Springs Mall too. Of course they merged with Kmart. They are now mostly a real estate holding company.

A new place called “The Home Store” opened in the old Kmart (I think it’s owned by Sears) and it’s packed but is new so that new store smell will wear off!

It’s time to put a leash on these corporate entities - the question is how.

Get rid of corporations. They are completely unnecessary. Corporations are not businesses - they are fake people. You can't have real and fake people living in peace. One or the other will dominate and destroy its opposite. They have two different laws bad on two different philosophies.

So getting rid of corporations - ALL of them - and their legal definitions, is the answer. That is the truth, and that WILL happen. Because if it doesn't, the human race WILL destroy itself. There's no third way.

First of all, WalMart can move to another state where they’ll have to pay much higher wages. I doubt that will happen.

Second, their prices are higher than any of their competitors.

And third, I do not shop at Walmart. It’s a ghetto store.

I don’t understand why NASCAR is getting in the middle of this. Are they afraid they’ll lost some gay spectators? Or are they afraid some of their drivers will be outed.

Bottom line, we’ve lost NASCAR, we’ve lot the war.

The governor knows lots of voters work for Walmart. Especially those from south of the border.

Around this neck of the woods their prices are such that I can save approximately $30 -$50 a month in groceries. The gas station associated with the store I shop at is always 3 - 5 cents cheaper per gallon for regular. But ya know what, in protest to those marxalist/technocratic bastards trying to dictate to the governing body of Arkansas I will drop them like dog poo! Enough is enough. The damned capitalists are about to be taken over by a totalitarian mindset which will then tell them what they can and cannot stock in the ‘stores’.

I happen to think the law is worded poorly, but it is the purview of the elected representation of the people of Arkansas, not the marxalist trying to run the world. Asa had better be very careful whom he bows to ...

Man, you must live thousand of miles from me, where neither of those characterizations is true.

The sexual degenerate goon squad is now trying to force people to support their sexual degeneracy ‘marriages’, even being forced to attend the squalor and photograph the event. Time to shut them down not pander the more to them.

Asa Hutchinson is a waste in the battle for freedom, as are 95% of Republicans.

Yes, but he also knows that Arkansas voted overwhelmingly to keep gay marriage banned. Walmart CEO does not speak for Wal Mart workers when it comes to political views.
