After some setbacks over the past several weeks, top aides to Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker tell Breitbart News that hes toughening up his immigration position as he learns more about the issue.
Hes for border security first, enforce the laws on the books, fix legal immigration system with national interest in mind and then deal with those here, Walker spokeswoman Kirsten Kukowski said in an email.
Kukowskis comments to Breitbart News come after a trip Walker took on Friday to the border with Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott.
A lot depends on what the governor means by a: legal immigration system with national interest in mind. Still, this could be a step toward Walker remaking his image on immigration in the manner of Senate Judiciary Committee subcommittee on Immigration and the National Interest chairman Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL).
The question becomes: What does Walker think is a legal immigration system that serves the national interest? While he hasnt laid that out yet, theres a massive opportunity for either successor failuredepending on where he comes down on this matter.
He looks forward to further detailing his ideas on securing the border and enforcing the laws, Kukowski added. Yes, at the minimum, there needs to be penalties put in place. In addition to securing our borders, the federal government must enforce our laws, penalize those who break the law including paying back taxes, and implement a universal E-Verify system so employers are hiring legal employees.
Where Walker comes down on the immigration system could make or break his candidacy...

Sounds a lot like a McLame back track to get elected. Don’t think this guy is to be trusted on the issue........
Walker is a fast learner! Anyone who wins 3 times in blue Wisconsin has to be politically smart.
What difference does something like e-verify make if Walker legalizes and gives citizenship to illegals anyway?
And once he does that chain migration will lead to approximately 75 million new, majority Leftist and welfare-using, low-skill, new voters.
What he’s offering is the standard pro-amnesty, GOPe gobbledygook.
Exactly—what difference does it make if they “pay back taxes” (really, get back EITC) and “pay a fine”? It’s amnesty!
Walkers current stance on immigration is just as tough as any other candidate. NONE of the other candidates are pushing for deporting all illegals.
Walker has never said there was a path to citizenship for illegals. So in reality, the governor is simply clarifying his position.
What hes offering is the standard pro-amnesty, GOPe gobbledygook.
Yeah, I’m voting for Hillary, too.
Exactly.
Senator Cruz has almost identical position as governor Walker regarding illegals. So who do you prefer, if not Walker or Cruz?
If we elect a pro-amnesty “conservative”, he’ll be the last conservative this country ever elects.
He is having to learn his own positions on the major issues of the day, and base them on his political cunning?
I respect Walker, but he’s sounding like Romeney’s etch-a-sketch on illegals.
I understand that.
That is a lie, Walker is for citizenship, and Cruz is fighting citizenship with everything he has.
Cruz at least isn’t for citizenship or continuing virtual open borders, but I agree, he is regrettably pro-legalization.
We need to put pressure against all candidates on the issue and/or hope a better candidate emerges.
W’re merely signing our political death warrant otherwise.
[Hes toughening up his immigration position as he learns more about the issue.]
That statement sends up a red flag to me. How many years did Walker deal with immigration as Governor? He is learning more about the issue?????
I hope Walker raised a lot of money at that dinner.
So you hope that he won a lot of support at the private dinner where he said that he supports citizenship for illegals.
No wonder you dislike Cruz.
