Illinois Public Schools Can Demand Students’ Social Networking Accounts and Passwords at Will

O’Fallon Superintendent Dr. Darcy G. Benway recently sent this letter out to parents.

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Pursuant to Illinois School Code (105 ILCS 75/15), OTHS is required to notify parents/guardians that we may request or require a student to provide a password or other related account information in order to gain access to the student’s account or profile on a social networking website if the district has reasonable cause to believe that the student’s account on a social networking website contains evidence that the student has violated a disciplinary rule or policy.

This email serves as that notification.

Thank you.

Dr. Darcy G. Benway, OTHS Superintendent

Sure enough Illinois State Law 105 ILCS 75/15 allows schools to demand social networking passwords.

Sec. 15. Notification. An elementary or secondary school must provide notification to the student and his or her parent or guardian that the elementary or secondary school may request or require a student to provide a password or other related account information in order to gain access to the student’s account or profile on a social networking website if the elementary or secondary school has reasonable cause to believe that the student’s account on a social networking website contains evidence that the student has violated a school disciplinary rule or policy. The notification must be published in the elementary or secondary school’s disciplinary rules, policies, or handbook or communicated by similar means.

And I’m sure none of these liitle skulls full of mush could ever figure out how to have two accounts; one clean and one they actually use.

One could always return to the tried and true stand by: “The dog ate my password...”

Another day to be grateful we homeschool.

He's got a free ride based on his ACT and academic record, and he wants to be a cop?

No, he wants to get into the FBI or ATF. WIU is one of the top LEA (Law Enforcement Administration) universities in the country. The FBI recruits right out of WIU. Western Illinois University also sets the LEA Curriculum for other universities with LEA programs. Every single one of WIU's LEA instructors is a former FBI/ATF/Sheriff/State Police Chief/Federal Prosecutor. We've met every single one of them.

One of my neighbor's sons is with the FBI out of Chicago as a Forensics Specialist and he went to WIU. Was recruited right before he graduated.

I was also fortunate enough to make the acquaintance of James Greenleaf last year. He was the head of the FBI office in Boston who took down Whitey Bolger. I met him on the air (Amateur Radio, he's a Ham) one day. Greenleaf was very generous with his time speaking to my son about a career in the FBI and what it takes to get in. He's the kinda guy who makes you proud of our FBI.

My oldest son has his sights set high. In addition to his scholastic accomplishments, he's also a third degree blackbelt in Taekwondo, became an instructor at 17 (when he achieved his third degree belt) and has a perfect tournament record. The kid is wicked to compete against and at 6'4", 230 pounds he's got great reach, flexibility and speed. He won the very first tournament he was entered into at 10 and has never looked back. He's an amazing kid, sometimes I have a hard time believing he's actually my son.

If he were to simply become a cop I don't think I'd complain. He has his sights set higher though and I think he'll get to where he wants to me. He has his father's drive. :-)

Have you ever applied for a job with the police department in Philly. The first thing they asked you for is your passwords on your phones for facebook etc and read questionable things aloud to you.The schools have been hit with sexting scandals.Cutting is the hidden one.Do you have every password to your child’s account and read them everyday. That includes ipod, ipad, phone and computer.Even if you read them do you know the code words.Favorite right now instagram.FOLLOW ME ON INSTAGRAM - @M . BEFORE IT BE A PROBLEM .This is from twitter.Do you have their password on twitter.

Thanks, I really appreciate that. We (wife and I...) sacrificed alot so she could be a stay at home mom for the kids. I believe it made all the difference in the world.

If good means not good, then you’re correct.

I’d move my kids out of those schools,so fast. F#ck big brother godless public schools. They despise true patriots and anything Christian and conservative - especially in Illinois.

This is a great idea...get them prepared for their future under careful control and supervision of “authorities”.
A very BLEAK, Richard Burton “1984” type of future, of course.

Let’s get this straight: The SCHOOL SYSTEM works for US. We don’t work for THEM.

The ACLU, who conservatives rabidly knee-jerk as the enemy, will be on this pronto, I hope.

I would stick up for my kid 100% on this, although “I” might demand the passwords for myself. The state can go #%#@$ themselves with a crowbar.

Post “Bomb-making” instructions in 1024 bit code that taxes the NSA’s finest supercomputers and about 4 megawatt-hours to crack. Decoded, it’s a Chicken Parmesan recipe’ from a 1950’s cookbook.

"If he were to simply become a cop I don't think I'd complain. He has his sights set higher though and I think he'll get to where he wants to be."

From reading your description, my opinion is that your son is going to be a fine hire for any agency. From my point of view though, being a Federal officer is not setting his sights "higher" than being a "cop." They have a different law enforcement focus.

The action might be good for one situation but I’m thinking the idea or authority in this day and age could be extended to other facets of life by those so disposed to do/extend such.

“I’d seriously consider making up a fake Facebook page “

That’s a great idea; decoy Facebook, Twitter, etc., pages. Better idea: Home schooling or private religious school.

Actually, they don’t need passwords; any government entity can hack into anything if they are truly motivated. It’s been that way for years.
