Even though Virginia is one of only a few states not having to deal with the alleged "dumbing down" of the controversial Common Core, many parents statewide are now concerned with the proposed ban on zeroes from the classroom so that students' feelings aren't hurt.

A Closer Look"Protecting" students from knowing about their subpar performance is different from school to school.

"[Students cannot receive a score lower than 50 percent] unless they did not actually do the assignment or put in effort to do it," Montgomery County Public Schools spokesperson Dana Tofig told The Washington Post....

Fired from job after job? You have to get the job first and that isn’t likely to happen. Perhaps moving from prison to prison or work farm to work farm? “Wiping it off, Boss.” Maybe they could win the hard boiled egg contest?

Speaking of dumbing down, has anyone noticed that McDonald’s refers to a yoke as a “round?” If you order the egg white sandwich they refer to it as “no round.”

Bburg is pretty conservative for a college town.

25 years ago the HS principal tried to ban grades of 0. The idea was that a 50 is still failing, but can be recovered from. If after your first 0 you earn a 100, you still have a failing 50. The assumption was the student will be demoralized and defeated.

The plan was blocked by parents, teachers and student who think one should get what he earns, a disincentive to getting a 0 in the first place.

We can get very pathetic. About a decade ago, they banned using red pens to grade students’ work because it made students feel bad to see red on their papers. No joke.

I found that when child got a few zeros for failing to turn in homework assignments on time, and then I showed him how badly those hurt his grade average, he finally got the idea.

my daughter, a former teacher now in Education Administration , and that is exactly how she explained it to me.
I’m on the fence.
I see the point of it. I don’t see the value of it.

I’d much rather see a teacher take 50 points away from a student who gets 100 and give them to a student that gets a 0.

Then watch everyone’s heads explode and hope someone “gets” it.

True, but they still vote for the libs by a pretty healthy margin, but as you stated, they ARE a college town. I call it the ‘Berkley’ of SW VA. lol

“That’s racist. Arabs invented zero.”

The Arabs want the world to think that, but it isn’t true. It was invented at least 2000 years before Mad Mo took credit for inventing the world.

lol That’s a great point.

Driving through the town of Floyd is about like Woodstock. The wife and I enjoy driving through there on a nice weekend day, just for the entertainment value. I’ve always heard there’s an actual ‘hippy’ commune somewhere around there. Could be an urban legend(rural legend in this case lol). Who knows.....

There used to be a Y2K commune called Rivendell in Floyd County. It disbanded after Y2K was a bust. Very conservative.

I think it slipped by GOPUSA that they were talking about Montgomery County, MD, not Montgomery County, VA. But I’m sure most all our FReepers already perceived that distinction.
