AP does this crap quite frequently. From climate and weather to gays and transgenders and that’s only for starters AP style is weighted heavily in favor of the liberal agenda. Even if a reporter is objective AP style tends to nudge the copy to the left. It’s sickening.

The irony - fewer hurricanes, fewer tornadoes, less severe weather in general baring human action like pollution in China
So the weather extremes are actually declining right now.
They are only admitting that they have used a term that had only had one meaning. The Earth was getting hotter.
Now they want to use a term that can mean whatever they want it to mean as they dictate how you run your life and who you should really listen to.
The more vague they can be about anything the easier it is for them to deny what was said in the past.
