Phil Robertson is an embarrassment, not a hero, and the socially conservative movement needs to distance itself from him immediately.
Dont get me wrong I agree that our culture is experiencing a terrifying shift towards censorship. People have become so easily offended that its almost impossible to say anything without someone getting upset about it; and concepts like trigger warnings, safe spaces, and microaggressions are threatening free speech.
But none of this changes the fact that Phil Robertson is an ignorant buffoon, and that many of his comments despite the fact that he does have every right to make them are not ones that anyone should ever want to be associated with.
Now, before you start composing your hate mail think about it. Do you really want a dude who is going to publicly ruminate about the gruesome rape, murder, and castration of a man and his little atheist wife and two little atheist daughters to be an official face of your #brand?
And he is an official face. He spoke at this years CPAC, where he also received a free-speech award named after conservative legend Andrew Breitbart. As for his most recent controversial comments, he made them during a speech at a prayer breakfast, and the very fact that he was given the role of speaker suggests that hes viewed as a model of the Christian faith. Hes an icon but why?
After all, lets be honest: His detailed hypothetical about the brutal rape, murder, and castration of an atheist family was disturbing, and his underlying point that only a Christian could understand why these activities were wrong was ignorant. It provided anyone who might accuse Christians of being intolerant with about the best piece of ammo that I can imagine.
So, Team Robertson when people meet you and you tell them youre a Christian, are these comments ones that you would want them to ascribe to your belief system? If not, say so! And if yes, well, good luck out there.
Katherine Timpf is a reporter for National Review.
How is this different from Democrat scare-mongering?
You forgot the barf alert.
GOPe
I’m waiting for National Review to explain why Jason Lee Steorts is an acceptable conservative and Mark Steyn is not.
On the list of 1000 worst problems in the world . . . this doesn’t make the list.
Je suis Phil!
I recall something about prominent Leftists stating that “climate change deniers” should be incarcerated/reeducated/killed. Could she kindly elaborate on that one? and a variety of others like it?
So you barfed?
GOPe magazine. The fan club of taking it up the wazzoo. This is who claims to be our alternative to the dems. Ever feel like there is just one party?
I notice she didn’t bother defending her characterization of his comments with the actual quotes.
Phil Robertson took moral relativism to its natural conclusion. That doesn’t make him a buffoon. Far from it. He speaks common sense to corruption.
>>How is this different from Democrat scare-mongering?
I was thinking the same thing. Why do we always have to “tone it down” while the Progs just keep turning up the crazy AND the volume on their rhetoric?
Well, Katherine, we put up with you.
William F. Buckley Jr. is turning over in his grave thinking of what has become of his once great magazine.
i vote for Mark!!
Hey Kathy, take your Marie Harf glasses and join the Left in their Godless New Republic. We over here in the Free States don’t have a problem with what Robertson said. If you have a problem with it, we are fundamentally incompatible.
Who / What in the hell is a Katherine Timpf and why should any thinking person give a rats ass what she does, says, writes or thinks ? Iron my shirt Kate an STFU....
Sorry for my verbiage but socialist progressive feminazi presstitutes piss me off ..... hugs !
Phil is an ignorant buffoon?
He has a master’s degree, and is worth tens of millions of dollars.
If a Democrat said what he said, the chattering class would be endlessly appalauding the “boldness and clarity” he brought to the subject.
Writers for the National Review are mostly FAILS lately.
I like uncle Sy, he’s a wise sage...........
