The co-pilot of Germanwings Flight 9525 appears to have deliberately crashed the plane after he was left alone in the cockpit, according to a French prosecutor.
The captain was intentionally locked outside minutes before the A320 crashed into an alpine mountain ridge, French Prosecutor Brice Robin said Thursday. Co-pilot Andreas Lubitz, a 28-year-old German national, was silent throughout the planes descent and was alive at the point of impact, according to the prosecutor.
Mr. Robins conclusions are drawn from the planes cockpit voice recorder, recovered at the crash site in the French Alps late Tuesday and analyzed by French accident investigators on Wednesday.
The recording contains screams believed to be from passengers, once they recognized the plane was crashing.
Investigators are now exploring why Flight 9525 went into its unauthorized descent from its 38,000-foot cruising altitude with one crew member absent. The descent led to the crash about 10 minutes later.
French air accident investigators said on Wednesday they extracted information from the jets cockpit voice recorder. The recording contained voices and other sounds, said Rémi Jouty, director of Frances aviation accident investigation office, which is leading the probe. He added that there was no explanation yet for why the plane went down.
Germanwings, the low-fare unit of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, hasnt disclosed the identity of the pilots....

“Killer co-pilot had to STOP his training because he was depressed and suffering ‘burnout’: First clues into why German deliberately flew plane into mountain after locking captain out of cockpit”
“From cruise altitude to impact was 8 minutes.”
I’m not sure it would have made a difference, but I thought that I read somewhere that the time interval was changed to 18 minutes until impact.
Ok, now I understand. Thank you.
The rejections that homosexuals encounter are ten times worse than heterosexual ones. Who knows, there may have been some issue between these two pilots.
I agree, something set this guy off, and it might have been like spontaneous.
He just started turning the wheel, and turning and turning. The descent alerted scrambled Mirage.
There was maybe a reason, maybe there’s wasn’t. Maybe he was just nuts. It happens. Maybe he hated his homeland and wanted to kill a lot of Germans. Seems like a lot of trouble to kill only 3 Americans.
Everything isn’t about us.
If it was only 8 minutes, the jets wouldn’t have had time to get there. In any case, there’s no “wheel.”
He just set the controls for a descent, but how could he have done that? Normally there would be coordinates or a destination, I would think, unless there’s some way to put it totally under manual control and he set it to descend and simply sat back and kept clicking the lock on the door so the pilot couldn’t get in.
“Probably not a muslim, or he would have been screaming allahu akbar.”
I don’t think the entire tape has been released. Wait for it...
My understanding is that on an A320, if you push forward on the stick you can set a rate of descent and the autopilot will hold that rate of descent for you.
“Im kind of curious as to how the voice recorder was accessed so soon after being found. This stuff usually takes weeks before being released.”
It was imperative for the future of Lufthansa and Airbus that they publicize the cause. It apparently wasn’t mechanical.
At the press conference they said he would have had to actively started and maintained the descent.
The six month window hiatus in the middle of training for treatment of depression offers a few possibilities for subtle conditioning. Depends on who was giving him treatment. Still a lot of ex-stasi in the tall grass over there. Some with long standing ties to arab terrs.
That makes sense.
Descent took 18 minutes.
Yes, I’m sure they wanted to make that clear! They were pretty quick on this one, but it may also have been because it was more obviously not mechanical and also because they actually could find the device. Most of the other mysterious crashes or disappearances have been at sea, where it’s much harder to find these things.
That’s what I thought...18 minutes, in which case the French could probably have gotten jets up there because I’m sure by then ATC had sent out an alarm that the flight was not responding.
So? What does his age have to do with whether or not a person can breathe normally while having a stroke?
Illegal cell phone blockers can be ordered from the Internet. Not sure how they work, but could one have been involved?
I can’t believe so many FReepers can’t read. I didn’t say anything about the lock. Somebody questioned whether the copilot could have been having a stroke. Somebody else replied that he was breathing normally, as though that ruled out a stroke. I replied that my husband breathed normally while having a stroke. How does that merit the wild replies I’ve been getting? I never said, nor suggested, nor even thought that normal breathing meant he couldn’t have locked the door.

Another albeit subtle clue surfaces: TheAge: ...French investigators have contacted German authorities to find more information about the co-pilot.
