Half-Japanese and half African-American, Miss Nagasaki Ariana Miyamoto is the first-ever mixed-race Miss Universe Japan.

But changing perceptions here can be an uphill struggle. In a culture that typically prefers pale -- where "pure Japanese" white skin is considered a symbol of beauty -- the darker skinned Miyamoto's crowning last week was a revolution on the runway.

You mean half Filipino half black? Because Filipinos are not black

Are they trying to spin this as a racist thing against blacks? Because it’s not about that. This is about being less than 100% Japanese. Half white half Japanese hear the same comments.

She could pass off as south east Asian (Filipino or Malay) or north east Indian (mizo or Naga)

Actually there are more than 5 races: Negroid (sub Sahara African), Caucasians (Europeans, north Africans, Semites (Jews and Arabs), iranis and Indians and dravodians (south Indians and Tamil), and aborigines) then Malay-Polynesian, tungusic-mongol-Chinese, khoi san

Other countries have defined citizenship as a choice: Ancient Rome, the city states etc. Remember that there is a difference between citizenship and nationality.

Aborigines and people from Papua new guinea are surprising Caucasians. As are Drabidians

Sorry, not only I am not expert in the identification of races to ague, e.g., are South Indians a distinct race or a mixed-race people; but, the structure of your sentence is very complex. As I count the races you have identified:

1. Negroid
2. Caucasians (2a Europeans, 2b North Africans, 2c Semites [Jews and Arabs], 2d Indo-Iranians and Draodians)
3. Aborigines with a misplaced close-parenthesis
4. Malay-Polynesian
5. Mongoloid
6. Koi san (Bantu people of Southern Africa)

I don’t know where you would place the original people of the Americas. (#5?) Do you really mean to lump Mediterranean Europeans in with Northern Europeans? What about Laplanders and Magyars and Finns? (#2a?) And, what about Papuans? (#4?)

My point is that adaptation to local conditions resulted in the what are called the races. But, modern technologies has made race obsolete. Any set of human genes described as a race or sub race or mixture of races is just as good as any other set for inhabiting anyplace on the planet. If there ever was any truth to the argument for a master race, it was that because of survival of the fittest each race was the master race of its locality. For example, African people were the master race of Africa.

I agree with you. The idea of citizenship as a choice, not a product of race or kinship was not wholly new to the U.S. It did not emerge fully-formed from out of nothing out of the heads of the Founders. It wasn’t even fully embraced by all the people of the U.S. (think Dred Scot decision). There were antecedents including in particular Roman citizenship, as you mention. We Americans are not arrogant about this. We honor those, like Cicero of Rome, who helped to form our understanding of what is the nature of man, and what should be the nature of government.

Really?

By claiming that a black woman winning the Miss America pageant constituted setting it up for destruction?

No, by claiming that a black porno queen winning the Miss America Pageant constituted setting it up for destruction.

Do you have comprehension difficulties?

In that case, why did you make a point of mentioning that the runner-up was also black? Was she also a “porn-queen”?

Hi -- sorry, was typing that on a phone

What I meant was:

  1. Negroid (Bantu-speakers)
  2. Caucasians
    1. Indo-Europeans/Aryans (Indians, Iranis, Europeans)
    2. Semites (Arabs, Jews
    3. Berbers + Egyptians
    4. Dravidians
    5. Aborigines and Papua new Guineans (yes, surprisingly, they are Caucasians)
  3. Malay-Polynesians (Filipinos, Mays, Indonesians, Polynesians)
  4. Khoi-San --> NOTE: these are NOT Bantu people, in fact they are probably the most genetically different from other people
  5. Mongoloid including Native Americans

Yes, Mediterranean peoples + Northern Europeans are genetically similar, as they are to Berbers. The Europeans are by and large Aryanic peoples -- perhaps with the exception of Magyar and Estonian and Saami who I think are more related to Mongoloid but have intermingled heavily with Caucasians

Papuans are Caucasians

I believe that Pygnmies in Africa form another race, but I'm not sure about that

"races" - I would see that there is a clear separation between the Caucasians-Mongoloid and the Negroids over a period of time and by the Sahara desert (but the Kushans tend to spoil that theory).

Your idea of master race is correct for a period of time and dependent on technology -- Bantu speaking peoples were not the masters of the deep Congo -- the pygmies were, until Bantu peoples developed advanced spears etc. Ditto for Khoi-san who were masters of the Kalahari until Bantu peoples with agriculture and animal husbandry came along.

And as for Europe, it was mostly forest until at least 700 BC. The pre-Celtic peoples of the British Isles and Hispania I don't know who they were, but they were tiny numbers of people who were outnumbered by the peoples coming of the east with the development of agriculture and the creation of spoke-wheeled chariots

As I said, I am not expert in the races within the human race. However, the situation has been quite dynamic, with a lot of migrations, especially along longitudes. And, disentangling unique races from the mixed races, and from isolated tribes of other races, is a challenge.

Now that I am clued in on Khoi-San (Bushmen and Hottentots), they seem to qualify as a genetically identifiable race, preserved for many years by their geographic isolation.

“Yet, we can suppose, these attributes enabled us to better adapt to the conditions of northern Europe. Adaptation and cross-breeding with other migrations could explain the uniqueness of the original peoples of Australia and the Americas.”

Yes, cross-breeding and immigration aside, that’s what I meant specifically about indigenous Australians; they, over the centuries, must have adapted to the climate conditions here in Australia. Especially if, as Cronos says, they’re originally Caucasians. Though in Australia they are not classified as Caucasians.

An interesting point is that the children of Aboriginal and European Australians can easily look much more European in hair and skin colour, only after a generation. Whereas the children of a Negroid (African) and a European predominantly look African - black gene seems to be more dominant in the case of the latter.

hmm.. maybe I was mixing them up with Torres Strait Islanders here in Australia. Here they are classified as Melanesians.

BTW, am not sure those from Papua New Guinea are all originally Caucasians, since there are many different ethnic groups indigenous to PNG.

Anyhow it’s all very fascinating.

Well most African American are not pure African genetically. Like our President is half Irish

Then it's highly unlikely Trayvon could ever be Obama's son?
