The memory card ( or some such software) was not found inside the second recorder.

I think it was removed prior to flight by someone in maintenance. I know in the US there are lots of Somalis working around airports.

Germanwings says 150 people were aboard the plane that crashed in the French Alps on Tuesday, but it has not yet given a final toll of the victims’ nationalities. The company says it’s still trying to reach the relatives of some victims and that the count is complicated because some passengers may have held dual citizenship.

Here’s a look at what is known about the victims’ nationalities:

— 72 Germans, confirmed by Germanwings.

— 35 Spaniards, according to Germanwings; Spain says there may be up to 51.

— 3 British, confirmed by the government, which says there may be more. Germanwings could only confirm 1 British.

— 3 Kazakhs, confirmed by the government

— 2 Americans, confirmed by the government and Germanwings.

— 2 Argentines, confirmed by Germanwings.

— 2 Australians, confirmed by the government and Germanwings.

— 2 Colombians, confirmed by the government. Germanwings listed 1 Colombian.

— 2 Iranians, confirmed by Germanwings.

— 2 Japanese, confirmed by the government. Germanwings listed 1 Japanese.

— 2 Mexicans, confirmed by government. Germanwings listed 1 Mexican.

— 2 Venezuelans, confirmed by Germanwings.

— 1 Belgian, confirmed by Germanwings.

— 1 Dane, confirmed by the government and Germanwings.

— 1 Dutch, confirmed by the government and Germanwings.

— 1 Israeli, confirmed by the government and Germanwings.

— 1 Moroccan, confirmed by French Prime Minister Manuel Valls.

— 1 Turk, confirmed by the government.

Operations manuals and training videos are readily available all over the Internet for all types of commercial aircraft including this one.

The whole purpose of real security is to put in place a system that even if the whole world knows how it operates, it’s still secure. “Security through obscurity” rarely works.

Security is said to depend on any or all of:
something you know (pass code)
something you have (key)
something you are (finger print)
and more secure systems use two or three of these, such as a finger print scan and a pass code, or a SecureID and a passcode, or all three.

The operation of the cockpit door sounds like it has been well thought out and offers security even if the bad guys know all of the details. However, it does rely on being able to trust the guy behind the stick. The NYT report seems pretty far fetched as it means that for the pilot to not be able to reenter the cockpit he (and the crew) have either forgotten their pass codes, the keypad refused the pass codes or otherwise malfunctioned, or - what everyone is speculating about - the other pilot at the controls actively prevented the reentry.

I feel a lot safer when proper security mechanisms have been put in place rather then relying on someone to keep a secret. Secrets are hard to keep.

That or Husain
I’ve been asking since it happened : “what is the religious persuasion of the pilot and co-pilot?”
No one seemed to know.
If another staff member occupied the cabin while the pilot relieved himself maybe we should ask about other staff too. He could have somehow incapacitated the co-pilot and taken over

Exactly - the names of the pilots were out immediately, in the case of MH370. Likewise, in Aust, as soon as we heard that two Aussies were killed on this plane in the French Alps, we knew their names - there is no point in holding it back.

A lot of people must know the names of that pilot and co-pilot. The silence is becoming puzzling.

Problem with that - time is only important if you're aiming for a target, like a city. And why wouldn't you, if you're a Muslim terrorist? But apparently the goal was just a long, slow descent into the mountains. Doesn't sound like a terrorist target.

Which would do more damage to the European economy: a random terrorist incident, or giving the impression that Airbus planes will fall out of the sky for no discernible reason?

As far as not announcing a terror attack: perhaps they want to intimidate European leadership, without generating a public clamor to move against Islamists?

German newspaper reported this.
The pilots named as Patrick S and Andreas L

privacy laws in Germany stop the release of the last name.

It should not be hard to figure out the last names given this information.

The passengers are identified as "Turk," "Iranian," "Moroccan, and "Kazahks," according to their passports.

Following Politically Correct EU style, you will not know if the "Germans," "Belgians," "British," etc., were Muslims for quite a while, if ever.

Note also: some passengers may have held dual citizenship.

Secrets are hard to keep? That sort of goes against FR’s reminder that loose lips sink ships. Very respectfully, I hope no one ever considered giving you a secret clearance.

I would not put it past [insert radical Muslim terrorist group of your choice here] to have swapped the real copilot for a double, just to create a diversion from what is going on in the middle east.
